Recently, I made the horrific mistake of dropping my cell phone in a toilet. Not only did I have to go the rest of that day without a cell phone, but the next entire WHOLE day without it again. I know what you are thinking, “Oh, man. That sucks,” or “How stupid can you be to drop your cell phone in a toilet?” Believe me, stranger, I thought the same things. I am quite stupid for dropping it in the toilet, but believe me, it happens all too easily.
So, anyways, I thought it wouldn’t be too bad. In fact, I thought it might be refreshing to go a day without my cell phone. No Facebook messages, no texts, no voicemails (yes I still get those). However, I went through 3 different phases of desperation throughout this long, LONG day.
1 – What Time Is It?
Shortly after starting my day (about 2 minutes to be exact) I found myself wondering what time it was. That initial reflex to go for your pocket when this moment strikes is still present even without your phone. I found myself doing the “reach” every few minutes until I realized that I did not have a phone today. Then I thought, I could ask someone what time it is, but then they’d wonder why I don’t know. “Why doesn’t she have a cell phone? That’s strange.”
2 – What If I Need To Call Someone?
After realizing I will never know the time during this day, another terrifying thought came to mind. What if I need to call someone? What if I’m stuck somewhere? What if I get mugged? What if I’m running late or lost? Well, looks like I’ll just be stuck, mugged, late, or lost because there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. Have you ever tried asking someone to use their phone for a call? “Uh, I don’t have a phone.” Or the classic, “My phone is dead.” And, hey, I don’t blame them – I wouldn’t give a phone to me either (I’d probably just drop it in a toilet again.
3 – I Have Nothing To Look At When I’m Alone In A Public Place.
Everyone does it. All. The. Time. When you are waiting for someone, sitting alone, or jut bored, what do you do? Look at your phone. Pretend something really important has happened on your phone and just look at it occasionally touching the screen or swiping from side to side. Yeah, I couldn’t do this so I had to turn to the old fashion way of being bored. It’s called sitting and staring at your shoes.
Moral of the story? Don’t ever drop your phone in a toilet. Ever.
