Three former members of the Japanese idol group, Sakura Gakuin, have formed Babymetal: A fusion of J-pop vocals and dance over death metal instrumentals. The girls, are aged 14-16, sing and scream in cute, high-pitched voices about topics such as chocolate and bullying as unpublicized guitarists and drummers rock out in the background. The whole concept of Japanese idol groups is all about uniformity, innocence, and being cute and perfect. Metal rock is known to be exact opposite of all aspects of idol groups, yet Babymetal follows all of these norms. Nonetheless, the group seems to have a huge following and their songs are actually quite catchy. You can check out their live performance for “Give me Chocolate” below:
