Hey y’all! I’m sure you know which dress I’m talking…right? Right. At least 3 people I talked to yesterday asked me if I saw Blue/Black or White/Gold…it was driving me insane! Thursday night, someone on Tumblr posted a picture of this dress and it literally broke the internet. Within minutes, it was ALL over Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest, etc. This ugly dress even made the news y’all, not once, not twice, but at least six times. I mean c’mon people, it’s a dress for crying out loud! The person who posted it claimed that she saw the dress to be white and gold but her friends saw blue and black, which confused her so she asked the internet to help her. And that, ladies and gents, is the story of how a dress took over the internet. Even these “crazy” busy celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Jimmy Fallon, Mindy Kaling and Kim Kashdashian (yes, that was on purpose!) took the time out of their day to comment on what color the dress was.
I never believed any of it…but for fun of it, I sent the picture to my sister, my mom and my boyfriend to see what they thought. And funny enough, they all texted me back saying the exact same thing: it’s an ugly blue/black color. I was always Team White/Gold all along so then I freaked out a bit too! Obviously, being the dedicated science major that I am, I had to find out the truth and an explanation.
Turns out…I was wrong and Team Blue/Black were right! I know this because Buzzfeed got to the bottom of the issue and found out that the dress was originally sold as a blue and black dress. But then, what about the other half of the country that saw the dress to be white and gold?? Well here are a few explanations for y’all, one of which is from Dr. Oz!
Explanation 1: Our brains “have to do a little math” to figure out the color of the dress. It has to subtract out the color of the light illuminating the scene. Here, some people’s brains chose to subtract out the blue, showing a white dress with gold lace. One the other hand, other people’s brains are subtracting out the gold, which makes them see a blue dress. Simple enough for me!

So there’s your answer guys, now everyone can go back to doing what they were doing!
