i didn’t know the city sky had stars
until you showed me their luster;
what dim nights i had in the year past
were now sparked full of color clusters;
by prickling constellation
and calming gaze of the moon’s eye,
all fears are hushed by night’s whisper
and my anxious mind is forced to comply
i walk with softer steps and windless heart
under the blanket you wrapped me in,
as a subtle reassurance that you, too,
feel the tranquility of their presence within
but i wouldn’t believe you if you told me
that the night's sky was never bare;
because if i’m being honest,
i think it’s you who put the stars there

the shapes in the stars take form
aligning themselves to your will, in threes
you are their creator, their conductor
a full orchestral sky at your command
and at your fingertips, they spark
into melodic measures that trail;
they lift sullen eyes--those of mine
and cast light into all hardened hearts
your creations wash the heaviness
out of the night's grasp,
bringing out the lightness of youth,
a childish smile i had never known
one dripping with sickly sweet nostalgia
for forest-lined streets that open
to gaping fields, like jaws
with rows of starry teeth
at once, your painted sky summons me home
to 3am strolls under snow-ridden trees,
with reddened nose under night's presence
i am myself again, backed by rushing breeze
