A Review of Party by Troye Sivan
I have been a fan of Troye Sivan for over 10 years at this point. I became a fan of Troye, first, from his YouTube channel. He would upload things like vlogs, popular social media challenges at the time, and singing videos. He would also collaborate quite frequently with other YouTubers, like Tyler Oakley, Zoella, and Connor Franta. Troye and Connor actually dated in the 2010s; the bulk of his second album, Bloom, is about Connor.
His YouTube channel wasn’t what lead me to his music, though. I remember very specifically hearing a song off of Blue Neighborhood, Troye’s first album, on Pandora for the first time. This was probably right around when the album came out, so I’m guessing I was 9 or 10. I initially didn’t like the music when I heard it, but I hadn’t connected that this pop music I was hearing was from a YouTuber I liked yet. I mostly watched Troye’s videos with Tyler Oakley to be honest; I don’t have a single memory of watching a singing video of his. I also somehow missed the release of his EP TRXYE. TRXYE came out the year prior to Blue Neighborhood, in 2015. Now, 11 years later, Troye is back, and in the rollout for his upcoming fourth album, She’s the Best.
I was excited to see that Troye Sivan was releasing another album. While I’m a big fan, I didn’t really like his previous album, Something to Give Each Other. Outside of the biggest song, Rush, the album wasn’t that interesting to me. When Troye put out the first single for the album, the title track She’s the Best, I was surprised! The song is more mellow than a lot of his standout songs from the last couple of years. It’s a very pretty song and very ethereal, and features Troye almost entirely talking. It’s a rock song, too. I thought the song was good but didn’t love it. However, the second single off of the album, Party, I really, really love.
This song is so good. It’s techno-y house song that features some of the catchiest lyrics. Very nearly the whole song involves Troye’s repeated mantra of, ‘Party in the park / Party in the bush / Party under the bridge / Party at the restaurant / Party at the club / Party in the day / Party at my house / Party on the way to the park.’ It’s so, so addictive and the way he says ‘party on the way to the park’ is so satisfying. The only part of the song with singing that doesn’t feature singing is when Troye interpolates Madonna’s song Music into it twice. Madonna is such a fun addition to this song, and it’s a really fun, familiar interlude in the song.
There’s a music video that accompanies the song too, and it’s so fun. It’s narrated by Sir Ian McKellen and set in the medieval times. It features Troye Sivan as a knight, and all of the dancers in similar medieval clothing. It’s a great music video, and I recommend giving it a watch!
So far with the singles from She’s the Best, I have no idea what this album will sound like. That makes me even more excited to hear it. Troye has been making music for over 15 years now, and it’s really cool that his sound is still changing. I’m not gonna listen to the rest of the singles to maintain the surprise, though.
