Albums to Spring us into Sweater Weather
As I sat freezing on the barricade waiting for This Is Loreli to perform at Chicago's Riot Fest, it finally hit me. It's now sweater weather! The objective best time of the year, and hands down the best time of the year for music! This weird mix of 60 degrees and sunny and 30 degrees and snowy lets me listen to both Slayyyter and Beach House in the same playlist without being judged. However, that is not the goal of today. Today, I'll give you some more of those mellow, acoustic-type albums I'm listening to to set the mood right.
"Silver Meteor" by Mila Degray has been an album I've had on repeat since last year. Seriously, this album has not left my rotation once, and for good reason. Mila Degray is able to combine so many emotions into just 35 minutes and 11 songs. Her lyricism and vocal range just amaze me. I definitely wish I could touch on every song on this album, but what fun would that be? If you can only listen to 3 songs on this album, make them: "Two Bridges," "Adore Her More," and "Sunny In LA." "Two Bridges" is the song that launched me into this album. The song reminds me of "Everything Is Embarrassing" by Sky Ferreira, solely based on those opening notes. "Adore Her More" does such an excellent job of building toward a dramatic end. Not only this, but those lyrics hit so hard and maybe a little too close to home. "Sunny In LA" is the 11th track of the album, and is the cherry on top. This song really does give it that "fall" theme and makes me want to burst into tears on the 3rd floor of the library.
Unfortunately, Dead Calm has now been taken over by TikTok and slandered repeatedly for using the rinse-and-repeat technique on this album. Dead Calm's "Bleed" leads the album and is now TikTok famous. The track currently has 66+ million streams on Spotify alone, nearly as many as the other 11 tracks combined. "Accept" is the definition of "White-boy-acoustic-yearning" music, which fits right into this theme. And I get it, not everyone wants to listen to the same guy scream over his guitar for 12 tracks, but Dead Calm has achieved something else. Besides "Bleed," I'd listen to "Jemma," "Oh My God," and "Rot." They all have their own twist on this genre and deserve a shot.
My third and final is admittedly my favorite album of all time. Anytime I have the opportunity to bring up this album, I will do so. "Waiting to Spill" by The Backseat Lovers has been my favorite album, containing my favorite song, since I started listening to music. Released in 2022, this is the Backseat Lovers' sophomore album. Following their hit album, "When We Were Friends," "Waiting to Spill" takes on all the emotion that "When We Were Friends" missed. "Waiting to Spill" focuses more on the instrumental parts, including many long interludes. I adore how The Backseat Lovers are able to go from one emotion and noise, to another in the blink of an eye. Specifically, on "Silhouette," the opening track, the long last minute overlay of sound, to the jumo cut into "Close Your Eyes," is chef's kiss. "Words I Used" is my favorite song on the album, and maybe my favorite song of all time. Piano is my favorite instrument and I love the use to help set the mood for this track. I cannot describe this song enough for how much I love it and what it means, so please, take a listen. "Waiting to Spill" is the most recent piece of work from the band, but fingers crossed to hear new music from the band this year.
