An intro to Noteworthy with Ivan Mitchell (Mondays, 6PM-8PM)

I often refer to Noteworthy as my baby. This is usually done with a wink, knowing full and well how ridiculous it is to bestow unconditional love upon something with no physical traits. But it’s the truth: I love the show as if it were my own child. It’s not a coincidence that something I love so much would be connected with music. Actually, it’s probably unsurprising to anyone who knows me. I’m the type of person that gets giddy at Lollapalooza or Pitchfork from the moment the gates open all the way until the final act leaves the stage and still begs for more. I stop mid-sentence in conversations and yell “YES!” whenever I hear a song I love over a great sound system, but you won’t get upset because I’ll have given you a heads up that it might happen before our talk progresses too far. I use any opportunity or occasion I can to make someone a mix CD. For example, the first person to comment on this post gets one. Try me. I’m dying to make someone a mix.

The show is an extension of that description. From 6:00-8:00 every Monday night, it’s my hope that you’ll hear something that excites or intrigues you, while possibly learning a few things along the way. Lofty goals? Sure, but we all want the best for our babies. As an alum (Inner Circle upbringing, folks), I’ve spent a lot of time raising my baby here at UIC Radio. It wasn’t always perfect, but I’d like to think I’ve been enough of a good guardian that I don’t get horrified stares whenever we make a public appearance nowadays.

What can you expect from Noteworthy? Well, just about a little bit of everything. The majority of my life has been one without borders when it comes to genres and I don’t plan on changing that anytime soon. Listening to D’Angelo, Kylie Minogue, St. Vincent and The Buzzcocks within a span of 15 minutes is as natural to me as blinking. While a typical segment of Noteworthy won’t include all four of those artists, you may hear them spread out over the course of two hours with transitions that hopefully feel seamless and earned. For a more complete picture of my recent listening habits, you might want to check out my best albums list of 2014. I also interview artists as well, but to get a better idea of what will happen week-to-week, you should like the Facebook page for the show. Most importantly, listen to the show every Monday night from 6:00-8:00 right here at http://uicradio.org. My baby’s not done growing yet and I’d love to share every big step with you along the way.
