Am I the only person who gets incredibly sad when their birthday is coming up? I switch back and forth reminiscing on everything I went through the past year. My birthday signifies to me how much older I'm getting and makes me feel so small. I start to think about what I've accomplished and if I'm living the life I want to live. to aid my thoughts, I love using music as a way to calm myself, especially if it relates to my situation. this week leading up to my birthday, I've been indulging in the sadness and listening to sad music. Here are the top 5 songs I’ve had on repeat. 

1. Chasing Moving Trains - Roy Blair 

First of all, I love Roy Blair, nobody I know rides as hard for him as I do. second of all, when did he enter my mind to create this song? The lyric, “Why’d I feel so empty in a room full of people who love me?” is perhaps the best way to describe how I’ve felt. March has been so weird, and this song has described it all perfectly. 

2. The Man with the Axe - Lorde

It seems Lorde knows exactly how to describe what growing up feels like. the lyric, “I thought I was a genius, but now I’m twenty-two” is so true. You think you know everything when you’re young, and as you get older, you look back and realize just how silly you were. There was so much I thought I knew, but like Lorde said, now that I’m twenty-two, I realize I know nothing. I am just a speck in this big world.

3. The Black Dog - Taylor Swift

Recently, I’ve also been a victim of missing old friendships. I know this is a song that’s seen romantically, but to my old friends, I just don’t understand how you don’t miss me?

4. A Quick One Before the Eternal Worm Devours Connecticut - Have A Nice Life

It’s crazy that this 7-minute and 53-second song can make me feel such emotions with no lyrics. I saw this song on a Walking Dead edit, which had Rick talking about Carl. That show is so dear to me, and now all I do is connect this song to that.

5. making the bed - Olivia Rodrigo 

My Pisces twin wrote this for her Pisces sisters honestly. This song captures what being a girl in her early 20s perfectly.
