Hey everyone! I'm back this week to review Olivia Rodrigo's new single; drop dead.
I'm running a bit short on time this week, so let's cut through the nonsense and get straight to it!
Sound
In terms of production, this song is definitely a pivot from GUTS! She mentions Just Like Heaven by The Cure in this song, and you can tell that kind of vibe is being recaptured here as well. If it weren't springtime, I'm not sure how ready I would be to receive a song that sounds like this, but I can definitely see this hitting driving around with the windows down on a sunny day- it's a very light-hearted sounding song. Even though it's a pretty standard pop affair, I think the sound complements the song's sentiment very well.
Lyrics
This is the part of the song that I was a little hesitant to accept with open arms. If it were any other artist who wrote it, I would think nothing of it and enjoy it for what it is. But love songs are few and far between for Olivia, so this kind of threw me off after my first listen. Which is weird, because it was made very clear that this next album would mostly consist of love songs, so I really don't know what else I was expecting. Regardless, I've started to come to the light, and I understand this song's purpose- to just serve as a relatable love story. There aren't a lot of standout lyrics to me, but Olivia's ability to paint a picture is very clear here. I see nights on the town under streetlights, yearning in a cluttered bedroom on her phone, waiting together for the bathroom at the bar- the story really unfolds as you listen.

Rating:
8/10
Notes:
A simple, but cute song!
New territory for Olivia, which might deter some fans who prefer her pop-punk sound.
Chorus is very catchy!!

Closing Thoughts
drop dead is a very easy but pleasant listen, even if it's not what we've come to expect from Olivia over the years. That's hardly a bad thing! It really feels like the start of a new era for her. I'm very excited to see where this album rollout continues to go- and I'm eager to hear the next single (whenever that comes around).
