God Forbid a Girl Yearns

Good morning freaks! It’s your Midwest Sweetheart here reporting for duty! Think of me as the unpaid worm in your ear telling you what you want to music you should listen to. For context, I’m sitting here giggling to myself while writing this, so read it and giggle with me.

GOD FORBID A GIRL YEARNS!

There are certain seasons of my life (mostly the cold ones) where I sit down and use the weekends to rot in bed and watch any rom-com/horror movie within my streaming capabilities. And guess what! We are so falling back into that slump right now. But it's ok! Because what’s better than rotting in bed while falling in love with the idea of romance? Walking in the cold while listening to music as your heart tries to crawl out of your throat. If you like that, boy, do I have the playlist for you. Now I’ve done my little hunting and gathering for you but this is only the tip of the iceberg its nothing depressing more lalala, no thoughts, head empty, watching the leaves fall as you wish for something playlist. I’m not going to go through all of the songs, just my top 5, and if you scroll to the bottom, you can hear the entire playlist on Spotify.

1.     Gimme a Reason – Tabar

I actually came across this song while watching a Peter and Louis edit, so shout out to that editor for putting me on to absolute heat. A thing I really like about this band is their guitar riffs. I would argue this falls in more of the Mathrock genre. There aren’t many lyrics, so if you're into that, this song is for you. It’s a great vibe for fall, and I think it’s really cute.

2.     Crane Your Neck– Lady Lamb

I’m not quite sure what genre this falls into, but I’ll say indie rock. I’m also not sure how I found this song, but I really love the way the singer makes you feel her intention behind her words. I feel like people oftentimes forget songs are poetry, but this song really reminds you of that. My favorite lyric is when she says, “I placed my palm upon your collar bone and wished to fall asleep deep in your marrow”. Because once again, God forbid a girl yearn.

  1. Cheetah – Deux Visages

I LOVE DEUX VISAGES!! And if you listen to my radio show, you’ll know I talk about them quite a bit (if you’re not listening to my radio show, what are you doing with your life). This was actually the first song I had ever heard by them; my sister showed it to me about 2 years back, and I’ve loved them ever since. Deux Visages is more of an alternative rock band, so if you’re into that, this is totally for you. I really love Daphne’s (the lead singer) vocal range and just how she sings in general, it's really nice. My chosen lyric from this song is “I’m not what you’re looking for, you’ll always want more”. It's giving manic pixie dream girl. If you haven’t watched Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, watch it, please. There were times in which I had to take a moment to reflect, specifically the scene in which Clementine is asking the main character why he doesn’t communicate with her when she tells him everything. When he said “just because you talk a lot doesn’t mean you’re communicating” (don’t quote me, I summarized it), my jaw dropped.

4.     Show You a Body – Haley Heynderickx

I first heard Bug Collector back in my sophomore year of high school, a substitute art teacher played her live recording as background music, and I had heard it somewhere before, so I asked them who it was, and they told me it was Haley Heynderickx, so shout out to them! The entirety of her album I Need to Start a Garden is absolutely amazing. I always refer to fall as hers because her music sounds like the trees if they had a voice. My lyric of choice from this song is “It was more of a mirage, in sickness and health, I showed you a body like a cluttered garage”. Another song of hers that I love is "First, I’m Sorry" off her Fisheye album, which I believe was her first ever album. If you like this song, definitely check the others out.

5.     Fallen Town – Iris Bilinsky

Finally, I have saved the best for last. My absolute favorite artist of all time is Iris Bilinsky. I came across mother Iris when I was scrolling on TikTok two years ago, and she screamed the lyrics of Greyscale Art, and it moved something inside of me. I love screamo music, from Midwest to Punk, because life feels better when you have a little worm screaming in your ear about how it isn’t fair. But Iris’ music is different. Her yelling was out of emotion and not so much frustration. If you dive deeper into her music its mixed experimental indie with folk undertones. Also, if you’ve ever played or watched the video game series Life Is Strange, I feel like her music gives the same vibes. Lastly, my lyric of choice is the following, “But I love the morning now, it's when you let me see your face, and you are so beautiful”. Like if that wasn’t enough, the beginning of this song sounds like you're standing in front of the train tracks while the train passes you by.

Well my loves, I hope you liked this, and if you didn’t, I simply do not want to know.
