Horror Movies on Hysteria

Hello everyone! Welcome back to another blog episode for Hysteria. I hope everyone is having a good fall! I genuinely can't put a number to how many pumpkin-flavored coffees I've had since August. I've been so busy lately, and I wanted to talk about a horror movie that had feminist/feminine themes, but there are so many that I can't decide! I already have two movies I will do a double-feature review of because my friend requested them (thank you, Julie), but I'm going to give a little preview of the other movies I want to review in October, since it is spooky season! Let me know if you guys have seen any of these, or if there are any other horror movies you want me to review. Enjoy!

  1. Ti West's X Trilogy

I can't lie, this is one of my favorite movie trilogies, and I'd be so stoked to review this! I absolutely love the time-period differences between the films, and I think Mia Goth is an amazing actress. Each film is filled with dramatic-sexy-campy-goodness, and though they aren't critically acclaimed, when have I ever reviewed something like that on here? Although I've seen all the movies, I'd like to watch them again to review the trilogy for Hysteria. Another thing I like about this series is that there's something for everyone! Pearl is filled with gory, classy, girl-next-door southern gothic tropes for those who enjoy that. X and Maxxxine are more modern, but X feels almost liminal as it dips between the antiquated farm and the contemporary lifestyle of a girl who wants to be famous at any cost (not to mention the Americana themes, which I'm obviously a sucker for). Maxxxine is probably my least favorite, just cause I'm not too into true crime or eighties themes, but they are done really well regardless.

  1. Reproductive/Maternal Horror

I think I have every reason in the world as to why an episode on maternal horror would be fitting for Hysteria. Not only is it a really common subject in feminist alternative music, but why would I not be enraged that every day I have to live with the fact that somebody, somewhere, could decide that the rights to my body might no longer belong to me, and my life could be changed for the worse forever? Body horror is also one of my favorite genres, and I think it lends itself really well to reproductive horror. I'm definitely thinking about carrying this idea into the upcoming school year and not limiting it to October! Plus, I just watched Santa Sangre, and if I have to be traumatized, so do you.

  1. Feminine Trashy Horror Movies

Since I always want to bring a "feminine edge" and point of view to things here on Hysteria, I would love to talk about some campy horror movies I've watched and see some new ones. I'm talking about those weird, psychosexual, trashy movies on Tubi like Frankenhooker and She Freak. I know they don't really seem relevant now, but I could definitely talk about a lot of the concepts in them. They're also just silly and fun to talk about. Usually, my technique for finding these movies first requires a very well-seasoned Tubi account; you click on one, and then they keep coming up like hotcakes.
