I get "Pride and Prejudice" Now

I finally got to experience the 2005 version of "Pride and Prejudice" in theaters this past weekend.

After being relatively underwhelmed by the book, my expectations were set reasonably despite this movie being universally praised. I have never been happier to be wrong.

I was prepared to follow along with all of the major plot points and acquainted with the characters, which really let me sit back and appreciate how gorgeous of an adaptation this is. This movie is so full of life, from the characters to the golden lighting and the lively camerawork. I was absolutely entranced. The second ball was a huge standout with long tracking shots that brought the party to life. I'm so glad I got to see this on a big screen, but I'm also afraid that I've nerfed all future watches for me. Both the indoor and the outside settings were so well done. I really don't know what was going on, but half the outside shots floored me. I was kicking my feet and giggling at the beauty of the English countryside.

Having to write about and spend more time with it in the past also really benefited my watch. It focused my attention more on different aspects of the story, fleshing it out in my mind beyond what the movie could have achieved in its runtime. The humor and wit are also much more visible on screen. The joy is absolutely infectious, especially in every scene Elizabeth is in. This movie would not work at all without her constant amusement, especially in scenes with her father and Jane.

Whenever I see people talk about this movie, it is always related to a few specific scenes with Mr. Darcy, and for good reason. The tension between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth is done so well, and I am ever the fan of their banter. Obviously, the big highlights were incredible, but my favorite scene in the movie by far goes to when Mr. Darcy bursts into the parlor to talk to Elizabeth and proceeds to stand there in silence, fumbling through what few words he ends up saying as an amused Elizabeth attempts to navigate small talk. That is when I really got it.

I'm probably in love with both of them. Absolutely in awe at how stunning Kiera Knightley's hair was throughout the movie. I spent a good third of the movie staring at her bangs. I really just cannot believe Keira Knightley looks like that, and Mr. Darcy made me laugh a lot, which is the equivalent of love tbh.

Final thoughts: I find it funny that half this movie is spent bowing, and I should really watch more Donald Sutherland movies because he is just brilliant. Best seven dollars I've ever spent.
