Hi again! Mitski surprise dropped another single from her upcoming album Nothing's About To Happen To Me, so I wanted to put it in the spotlight and give it a review. I also reviewed her other recently released single, "Where's My Phone?", so go check that out too if you haven't! I don't have much to add on before we start, so here we go!
Sound;
I was immediately surprised by this song from the jump. I wasn't really expecting this kind of sound, especially since her last single had a lot more bite to it. The energy in this song is very low-key and the instrumental would make for a very good song for a cafe or something. In comparison to "Where's My Phone?", this single has a lot more texture in its sound, even though I think "Where's My Phone?" is more interesting production-wise.
Writing;

Lyrically speaking, this song didn't really blow me out of the water initially. That's not to say it was written poorly, but that there wasn't a lot to mine here in terms of songwriting (other than a few select lines). The first verse is pretty straightforward, and it honestly sounds like something I've heard before. The chorus is also pretty simple, but I would argue that this is a case where the simplicity is actually working in the song's favor.
"I'll do anything for you to love me again" and "If you don't like me now, then I'll change for you" are very simple lines, but the desperation and bleakness in these lyrics make them powerful. Paired with her careful delivery of these lines, and the chorus has some weight to it.
Moving onto my favorite part of the song, the 2nd verse. She starts talking about how the bar is a magical place, where you can have "somebody" and yet "nobody" at the same time. This contextualizes the song even further, because it implies that the narrator is making an attempt to move on from the person they are so fixated on, with what is essentially a "quick fix". It's very easy to meet someone at the bar and stay glued to their side all night long, and not really think much of it in the moment. You both know this new connection is fleeting and will likely end when the night does. But you go along with it anyway, because the intimacy you feel with this stranger will tide you over until the one you're really after comes around. When the bar closes, the facade ends as you knew it would. In the span of only a few hours, you can go from having somebody to nobody. So after you say your goodbyes, you'll find yourself walking home alone. Just like that, you're back to square one.
She says, "So I'm loitering outside / Watching all the cars passing by / Like a kid waiting for my ride". You could say that the "cars" are supposed to be people, and that she's watching to see which one might pull over and let her in. When she says she's like a kid waiting for her ride, she's describing how powerless she feels in the matter. She's at the mercy of whoever her ride is, and she has no idea when they'll turn up. All she can do is hope that they eventually will. I may be reading too deep into it, but that's the beauty of a Mitski song I suppose! I really like how she describes being completely unable to change her situation, even though she's willing to change everything about herself to achieve her desired outcome. But no matter how much she's willing to change, some things simply can't be helped. This short verse was enough for the song to be completely recontextualized from being the typical "I will do anything for you to love me again" cliche into a deeper message about how tempting it can be to invest in "cheap love" while waiting for (what we consider to be) true love, even if we know it's not a sustainable way to deal with our emotions. Very interesting and relatable stuff!
"I'll Change For You"
Mitski

Rating:
6.5/10
Notes:
The soft production is nice, but it's not particularly notable
The lyrics are relatively simple compared to Mitski's past work, but she manages to turn it around and deliver a relatable message
The vocals are really good too; her voice sounds very smooth here
Final Thoughts

That about wraps up my review! This track was a nice surprise to get on a random Tuesday! I'm not sure if we can expect any more pre-release singles from this upcoming album, but I'm excited to see what awaits us regardless! With that, thank you for reading, and I'll see you next week!
