i owe this man at least 50% of my personality.

he's the reason i love the 60s, he's the reason i got into film, he's the reason i started learning french.

not to be dramatic, but i genuinely don't know where i would be without jacques demy.

now here's a rundown of three of his films:

the young girls of rochefort (1967)
the young girls of rochefort (1967)

a fun musical-comedy with a star-studded cast, featuring catherine deneuve (umbrellas of cherbourg), george chakiris (west side story), and gene kelly (singin’ in the rain). the small maritime town of rochefort is visited by a travelling carnival which disrupts the everyday lives of its inhabitants. full of love and music and humor, this is my definition of the perfect summer film. fun fact: the actresses who play the twins, solange and delphine, are sisters in real life!

umbrellas of cherbourg (1964)
umbrellas of cherbourg (1964)

a romantic drama with lots of love, loss, and longing. it has striking visuals, experimental editing, and all of the dialogue is sung! this was also the beginning of jacques demy and catherine deneuve’s professional collaboration. fun fact: damien chazelle said that la la land was heavily inspired by this film!

donkey skin (1970)
donkey skin (1970)

a musical adaptation of a classic french fairytale. it has colorful set design, extravagant costumes, and a surreal, dreamlike ambience that is both unsettling and comforting. highly recommended for people who like the japanese horror film, hausu.

and, you can see all of these movies for free on kanopy if you sign in with the uic library.
