Olivia Rodrigo Hath Returned!!

Hey everyone! Today I wanna talk about the recent announcement of Olivia Rodrigo's third album- you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Here we goooo!

Ever since she released the deluxe edition of her sophomore album GUTS (spilled) in early 2024, I've been patiently waiting for some new music from Olivia (like many others). There was a lot of speculation as to what direction she would go in after the pop-punk persona she had adopted during the GUTS era. It looks like we may be headed in a softer, less aggressive direction overall. While I really enjoyed the sound that Olivia curated on her last album, I figured it was time for a switch-up.

We don't know a lot about the music itself, but we do have a few clues to work with. An interviewer from VOGUE was played a couple of tracks from this new project, and reported that this was "some of her most experimental work yet". This has raised questions about what we can expect to hear from this record. Experimental in what way- production-wise or lyricism? We really can't tell for sure yet- but we do have a very small song snippet that we can point to. On her Instagram, Olivia posted a small clip of her newest single drop dead. It's a very small clip, but I'd go give a listen if you haven't yet. It sounds like we are headed in a direction that leans more towards pop than rock. I don't really have an issue with that, as long as there's some good experimentation happening in the production. That VOGUE interviewer better not be lying...

As for the art direction and style, I feel like this was a pretty natural route to go down. This kind of soft, slightly vintage aesthetic always seemed like something fit for Olivia. I've felt this way ever since she released the music video for Can't Catch Me Now. That being said, it's a pretty big pivot from the vibe of GUTS and SOUR, but it's not anything too alien or weird. I think this makes a lot of sense, as long as there isn't any dissonance between the sound of the album and the styling. We will just have to wait and see.

So here's the rundown- the album releases on June 12th. The tracklist hasn't been revealed yet, but preorders for the album are available if you want to grab a copy early. As I said, there is a lead single coming soon called drop dead, which releases this Friday (April 17th). You can probably expect a review of that single to be my talking point for next week's post. I better see you there...

As for now, we just have to wait for more information to come out. Thanks as always for reading, and have a great week!
