Pokémon Black and White: Truth vs. Ideals

Pokémon Black and White are the fifth main title entries for the popular series. This would be the first game to take the story in a more serious direction. The entry would not be received very well by fans at first because of features that seemed like a downgrade rather than an evolution. Such as limiting the roster of catchable monsters in the main game. As time has passed, these games have received the appreciation they deserve for their story and themes.

Fight for what's right

The game splits the debate of truth vs. ideals between two legendary dragons: Reshiram (Truth) and Zekrom (Ideals). Throughout your journey, you are shown many different perspectives via the evil organization Team Plasma's leader, N. N believes in an ideal world where Pokémon should be freed from humans, while your character seeks what is truly best for people and Pokémon. Team Plasma practices this ideology by fighting trainers across the region, stealing their Pokémon, and releasing them. They go around cities encouraging citizens to do the same. During the game, you are told you have a special bond with Pokémon, not like many others, causing you to fight the opinion that humans are forcing Pokémon into these pet-owner relationships. The game also relates to the debate of truth vs. ideals by having the different versions of the game be either set in the future or the past.

What do we learn

There is no answer given at the end of the game, as you are to reflect on what you believe. Can we strive for ideals knowing what the truth entails? Even if something is true, does it make it right? The answer isn't truth or ideals, it's living with both in harmony. This idea is very important for people to understand. Life is not always black or white; it is a vast pool of grey.
