predictions & hopes for the Oscars

Something coming up soon is the Oscars for 2026, this coming Sunday on March 15th at 6 PM. And I absolutely love movies, that being said I truly haven't seen that many of the nominations only a few. So that being said this is less of a predictions for the Oscars and more of who I hope wins also with a quick run down of nominees for the category, Considering how many categories there are I won't be touching on all of them, only the ones I have strong opinions about. Honestly, I'm not too big on award shows as much as I used to be, I think some of them are filled with just the worst hot takes ever. That being said, that's what pop culture as a whole is, everyone is entitled to their own opinion (even if I think some are less right than others). Which is what I do find quite poetic about pop culture. Award shows for me are more fun when you first see the nomination list and get to predict the winners, and then sometimes seeing the actual winners and either being pleasantly surprised or honestly a little pissed off. But I could go on and on about my opinions on award shows, so I'll save everyone from that trouble. For reference in this blog I'll name the nominees with with a little blurb on my prediction/hope for the award.I'll be saving the best for last with my best picture prediction (more like hope) for the end.

from the LA Times
from the LA Times

Actor in a Leading Role

  • Timothee Chalamet: Marty Supreme

  • Leonardo Dicaprio: One Battle After Another

  • Ethan Hawke: Blue Moon

  • Michael B. Jordan: Sinners

  • Wagner Moura; The Secret Agent

Prediction: This award should go to nobody except for Michael B. Jordan, now I don't want to dismiss Ethan and Wagner's performances but they don't compare to Michael B. Jordan's performance who simultaneously was playing two lead roles in one movie and portrayed the brothers Smoke and Stack so excellently they both had so much character depth and uniqueness despite being played by the same person. This takes pure talent and skill to be able to pull off helping in create and portray two characters who are brothers and main characters who have unique and distinct personalities. I truly would be so mad if this award went to anyone else.

Actor in a Supporting Role

  • Benicio del Toro: One Battle After Another

  • Jacob Elordi: Frankenstein

  • Delroy Lindo: Sinners

  • Sean Penn: One Battle After Another

  • Stellan Skarsgård: Sentimental Value

Prediction: I wholeheartedly believe Benicio deserves this Oscar the most, however, I wouldn't be upset nor surprised if Delroy Lindo or Sean Penn won. To me this kind of seems like a close race that could be any of the three, there may just be a slightly higher chance it goes to Delroy, but I really hope Benicio wins.

Actress in a Leading Role

  • Jessie Buckley: Hamnet

  • Rose Byrne: If I Had Legs I'd Kick you

  • Kate Hudson: Song Song Blue

  • Renate Reinsve: Sentimental Value

  • Emma Stone: Bugonia

Prediction: Truly zero debate whatsoever if Jessie Buckley doesn't win I'm taking down the Oscar Academy members who didn't vote for her.

Actress in a Supporting Role

  • Elle Fanning: Sentimental Value

  • Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas: Sentimental Value

  • Amy Madigan: Weapons

  • Wunmi Mosaku: Sinners

  • Teyana Taylor: One Battle After Another

Prediction: Again, zero debate it better be Wunmi who wins for supporting role (can you tell I like Sinners), but she also just had such an incredible performance. Honestly, I have a sneaking suspicion it might be Amy Madigan, and no hate to her she had a good performance, but oh my god I lowkey didn't like Weapons I thought it was weird and not in a good way and severely underwhelming. So, Wunmi I have my fingers crossed for you.

Film Editing

  • F1: Stephen Mirrione

  • Marty Supreme: Ronald Bronstein & Josh Safdie

  • One Battle After Another: Andy Jurgensen

  • Sentimental Value: Olivier Bugge Coutté

  • Sinners: Michael P. Shawver

Prediction: I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but I really hope Sinners wins, but I could see One Battle After Another winning and I wouldn't be surprised nor upset if they did, I think it could be considered a pretty close tie between the two of them.

Cinematography

  • Frankenstein: Dan Lausten

  • Marty Supreme: Darius Khondji

  • One Battle After Another: Michael Bauman

  • Sinners: Autumn Durald Arkapaw

  • Train Dreams: Adolpho Veloso

Prediciton: This could go to Sinners or to One Battle After Another, I could truly see either one but honestly my gut feeling is saying One Battle After Another.

Costume Design

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash: Deborah L. Scott

  • Frankenstein: Kate Hawley

  • Hament: Malgosia Turzanska

  • Marty Supreme: Miyako Bellizzi

  • Sinners: Ruth E. Carter

Prediction: Honestly I forgot Avatar came out this year which is what I noticed when writing this list. As much as I loved the costumes in Sinners, Frankenstein blew the competition out of the water and I think it would be well deserved for Kate Hawley to win.

Directing

  • Hamnet: Chloé Zhao

  • Marty Supreme: Josh Safdie

  • One Battle After Another: Paul Thomas Anderson

  • Sentimental Value: Joachim Trier

  • Sinners: Ryan Coogler

Prediction: Surprisingly enough I honestly would love to see Chloé Zhao win especially after winning an Oscar for best director and best feature film in the 2021 Oscars for Nomadland (2020), however there are so many great directors in this category and so much well done execution and I think it's gonna go to Ryan Coogler which would be one of his first (depending on previous awards during this Oscar's ceremony) but most definitely not last Oscar. I also kinda wish Guillermo del Toro was nominated for Frankenstein, but that's mainly wishful thinking and pure bias, and I definitely don't think it was win worthy.

Original Screenplay

  • Blue Moon: Robert Kaplow

  • It was Just an Accident: Jafar Panahi (also had collaborators)

  • Marty Supreme: Ronald Bronstein & Josh Safdie

  • Sentimental Value: Eskil Vogt & Joachim Trier

  • Sinners: Ryan Coogler

Prediction: I could see this totally being in between Sinners and Sentimental Value and I wouldn't be disappointed either way they both had an amazing screenplay that were both incredibly original and truthfully in my opinion they're both one of a kind. That being said thats why I think Sinners will win because it's the most original concept and it was executed amazingly and I think it is and will be one-of-a-kind for a very long time.

Music (Original Song)

  • "Dear Me" from the movie Diane Warren: Relentless

  • "Golden" from the movie K-Pop Demon Hunters

  • "I lied to you" from the movie Sinners

  • "Sweet Dreams of Joy" from the movie Viva Verdi!

  • "Train Dreams" from the movie Train Dreams

Prediction: This may be one of the categories that will anger me the most. I swear if "Golden" wins I might go on a rampage, just because it was catchy and was like a hit or whatever doesn't mean anything, that mainly shows how the songs success on it's own not it's role in the movie. I think when it comes to original song it should go to the song that was originally written for the movie that transcended it, it added an element to the movie that wouldn't exist without it. I think "I lied to you," is the most deserving. If you've seen Sinners, you know exactly how that scene felt, and how much the song added to it, there is no debate in my opinion, and there is no possible other song in the planet that would've made that scene what it was.

Production Design

  • Frankenstein

  • Hamnet

  • Marty Supreme

  • One Battle After Another

  • Sinners

Prediction: Honestly I think all the movies this year had a phenomenal and detailed set design, I can see this going to three movies, Frankenstein, Sinners, or Hamnet. Now which one, I'm not entirely sure but I know I'll be content if it goes to any of those three.

Best Picture (Also known as best film, I will not be adding all the producers for each film)

  • Bugonia

  • F1

  • Frankenstein

  • Hamnet

  • Marty Supreme

  • One Battle After Another

  • The Secret Agent

  • Sentimental Value

  • Sinners

  • Train Dreams

Prediction: So many amazing movies this year, many of which I wish I watched when they first came out but I was honestly late to watching them. Now as a surprise to no one if you've been paying attention to my past predictions and hopes that show just maybe a bit of bias, I hope that Sinners wins, again it is executed perfectly, and so much detail in the script, characters, design, time period, just everything was clearly researched extensively and it was beautifully put together, it is one of a kind and I really hope it wins.

Wrapping-Up

Scene from Sinners
Scene from Sinners

So basically, if you haven't noticed I'm desperately hoping for an *almost* complete Sinners sweep. Even though I didn't watch it when it first came out and it took me some time to get around to it, I will say I really loved it and I think a lot of it was incredibly well done. And also what may have been noticed is I desperately hope Marty Supreme wins nothing. Everybody who knows me knows I dislike Timothee Chalamet so that's partially why, I honestly never watched it and I have zero interest in watching in. I actually disliked Timothee before the recent events of him kinda showing his true colors, if you know what I'm talking about. So I hope that doesn't win anything at all. Overall, I'm excited to see who the winners are who I'm shocked by, upset about, or pleasantly surprised about. So if you're interested in the same thing, go and make sure to check it out on Monday the 16th, the night after the Oscars.
