Sounds of Doctor Who and also My Gripes

The British sci-fi soap has been off on hiatus for almost a year now with no lead cast and no news. Which is bad in theory.

I've been a Doctor Who fan for almost half my life, ever since I started enjoying TV and Film, I have been watching the show. Well, the 2005 reboot at least. I recently picked up a CD of sounds from the original show's run that started in 1963 and I'm going to be so for real, those sounds are amazing and so much more interesting than anything the show has put out sonically in at least 10 years, probably longer. Especially since they traded a majority of the electronic synth experimentation for more orchestral and choral pieces. And that's not the only subpar creative decision they made, another one is bringing back Russel T Davies as showrunner in 2023 and not new blood.

Doctor Who's popularity makes it a hard show to maintain, some want the show to keep to a formula of familiar themes and material, others want it to be constantly innovating. These sentiments swing back and forth like a pendulum, making a difficult job near impossible but I think that's just how running one of the most popular Sci-Fi shows in the world is. To me, the issue with Doctor Who today is money and industry.

When I was younger, watching David Tennent run around a shoddy set that looked grimy and gross, but most of the time I didn't see a set, I saw a place. The future wasn't pristine it's was lived in. Now in the current iteration, they have the budget to make giant elaborate sets that are clean and unmarked, and in my personal opinion that is part of where they went wrong. The design of the show was part of what made it interesting to me, sure the CGI and effects kinda sucked but the camerawork was cool and more interesting than what you get nowadays. When you compare scenes from say the first episode of the 2005 run to the first episode of the 2023 run it's day and night, which honestly is a bit sad considering they have like thousands more dollars but the lack of money from before bred innovation and creative ways to execute ideas, more they can just throw some half-job CGI villain and call it a day, no more guys in suites, this is just like modern Godzilla but without a really good Anno film in the middle. I guess this is me starting a Defund Doctor Who campaign, or if they do keep funding them they should bring back the cool music, I linked the tracks at the top of the post I highly suggest giving the middle ones a listen they are really super cool.
