Spark 2023: Preview

Spark, UIC's exclusive music concert, ignites the first weeks of the Fall semester with an electrifying experience, one that is just a week away! This event is not only a celebration of music but also a gift to UIC students, as admission is entirely free. Launched in 2010 as an exciting back-to-school initiative, Spark was conceived to infuse our campus with the talents of both local and national artists, including those who may have been flying under the radar or already enjoying widespread recognition. By blending a diverse range of performers and genres, Spark aims to deliver a rich tapestry of entertainment that resonates with UIC's diverse and dynamic community.

This year's lineup is no exception, showcasing a quartet of remarkable performers. Leading the way are the victorious competitors from the UIC Radio DJ Battle and Battle of the Bands competitions, DJergo and Lavender Point. They'll be setting the stage for a captivating opening act by Remi Wolf, all culminating in the final performance by our headliner, Aminé.

Spark will take place outdoors at Harrison Field on Saturday, September 30th; doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and close for entry at 7:30 p.m. with no re-entry permitted and RSVP required.

Lavender Point

Lavender Point are the victors of UIC Radio's 2023 Battle of the Bands and this will be one of their largest shows they have ever played! The trio consists of Julia, Hannah, & Maddie and they formed just at the start of 2022. The Chicago based band describe themselves as "softball emo" and are sure to dominate the Spark stage just as they did the Battle of the Bands stage at the start of this year.

DJergo

DJergo emerged as the victor in UIC Radio's DJ Battle held last autumn. Nearly a year has passed since that triumph, and now he's on the brink of reaping the reward: the chance to perform as one of the opening acts for Spark. Similar to Lavender Point, also UIC students, this gig promises to introduce him to one of the largest audiences he has encountered to date. Additionally, he has recently unveiled his first fully-original track (you can give it a listen below).

Remi Wolf

Remi Wolf is a name commonly heard around UIC Radio; she's a certified legend around these parts of the university. She describes her music as "funky soul pop" and has previously expressed her commitment to wanting to "innovate the sound" and erase the rigid rules of pop music. She's extremely colorful, impossible to miss, and is ready to absolutely ignite the Spark stage for the UIC community.

Aminé

Aminé is an American rapper hailing from Portland, coming all the way to headline the Spark stage here at UIC! He rose to prominence following the release of his 2016 single, "Caroline," which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Most recently, he has released a new collaboration album with fellow artist Kaytranada entitled Kaytraminé. The two are currently on their Kaytraminé Live tour and recently played a set at The Salt Shed in Chicago at the start of September (see our coverage).
