Well.. well.. well.. here we are again. I was initially planning on writing about something else for this week and just putting this release aside for another weeks post, but I found out only a few days ago that this double-single drop will actually be the last of its kind from Magdalena Bay so I figured I should just strike the iron while it's still hot.
Looks like these random single drops aren't tied to any kind of larger project, just a bunch of songs they wanted to put out. I gotta say, this is a pretty unique/weird way to release your newest music... but I guess Magdalena Bay just wanted to be different. So here we go, for the final time.. let's get into these new tracks!
This Is The World (I Made It For You)

This song has a pretty uplifting vibe running throughout it, with its chimey and catchy hook. On the surface, you could maybe even mistake this song for just another love song. But dig deeper into the lyrics, and you'll find that the real meaning of this song is quite sad. This song resembles a one-sided relationship where one person seems to make them their entire world despite their partner not doing a lot to feed their relationship. Despite knowing this, the other partner continues to put in all the effort into this relationship in order to prevent it from running dry. This isn't a new idea, it's been re-hashed again and again throughout time, so why is it so compelling to me? The key lies in the way it's being portrayed, rather than the overall message. Some of these lines depict the situation perfectly without words- such as "And something just has to happen, You give me silence, I'll give you noise noise noise" or "I love you, but you sink your teeth into me before the tables set, You spill the salt, I get the luck to show for it". These lyrics perfectly illustrate the situation, which takes a certain level of songwriting skills to achieve.
There are many other pieces to this puzzle that make this song relatable that I haven't yet mentioned. But for the sake of time, I won't get into it here. I think you should just take a listen and see for yourself! All in all, this song isn't very impressive in production in my opinion (for Magdalena Bay standards), but the writing in this song is a good demonstration of a simple idea being conveyed in a meaningful and profound way.
Nice Day

To completely flip the script, here's an example of a song with good production and just-okay lyrics. The sound of this song is gritty and intense yet calm at the same time. It's much better heard than explained, I don't think I could do it justice by trying to write it out. As for what the song is about, I'm pretty sure it's just a love-letter from Mica (main singer of Magdalena Bay) to her partner Matt (main-producer of Magdalena Bay). It seems like this song is supposed to embody what Mica feels before her and Matt get on stage for a live performance. It's romanticizing that lull of energy just before they go on stage to make new memories with both each other and the fans. It's a really cute idea, but the song is quite short and literally only has 2 choruses and one single verse, so there really isn't a lot of material to work with here. I think it's definitely an interesting stand-out in their discography, and I will definitely make an effort to return to it from time-to-time. If anything, I just hope they continue to explore this sound in the future, I think it's super cool.
Wrapping Up
And just like that, it's over! The strange Magdalena Bay single-review saga is over! As I said before, it looks like these singles were released as part of a larger collection as opposed to being a full-on EP or album. This weird smorgasbord of songs was officially named "Nice Day: A Collection Of Singles", which I think is pretty cool. Despite being a really unorthodox release method, I've had a lot of fun speculating about these songs and wondering if I would have some new Magdalena Bay music at the end of every week. If you haven't seen my reviews on the other singles from this collection, you can find each part in the recent posts section below. With that, thanks as always for reading. Next week we are moving onto something new! I swear!
