Trending How: Bangs

To cut bangs or not to cut bangs, that is the question.
If you know me, or watch my stories, or even just hear me, you'll know that I VERY frequently struggle with wanting to cut my bangs and at the same time, not wanting to.
For the majority of my life, I did not have bangs, something I truly am very thankful for. I have very curly, poofy hair, and growing up, I did not really know how to take care of it, which just made it... big. This + bangs would not have been a good combination for me at allll.
But, freshman year of college, something changed. I started slow, with very thin bangs, testing the waters. Second semester sophomore year, I went full send. Yes, it was after a breakup, but not in a breakdown way. While I can be very spontaneous, it's the timing that is on a whim, not the action.
And omg I loved my bangs. I had them for about 2.5 years? I started to grow them out in the fall of 2024, but then for real in the summer of 2025.
Lauren, you mean to say that you stopped having bangs maybe 6 months ago, and already you're thinking of cutting them again?? Well... Yes.
*Queue montage of my bangs (R.I.P.)*
But why are bangs such a big deal?? It's just hair...
Are they? Is anything just what it seems? I don't think so.
When someone changes their physical appearance, it is often because they are seeking change in their life, or other times because they are inspired by someone else, maybe both! Whatever the case, it is a break from who they were, into a new version.
One's hair can also say a lot about them, so what do bangs say?
Very often, they are associated with the 'manic pixie dream girl,' with characters like Ramona Flowers (Scott Pilgrim vs the World) or Summer (500 Days of Summer).

Zoey Deschanel has essentially trademarked bangs, her consistent, solid straight bang is one of the most committed relationships I've ever seen in Hollywood. It can show that someone is a creative, committed to their own upkeep, is wild at heart, pays attention to trends, misses the 70s, and, of course, the media they consume.
The stigma around bangs is all over the place, some see them as childish, others as artsy, chic, or the result of a 3 AM mental breakdown.
I mean, honestly, I think the majority of the hate for bangs comes from the fact that a lot of the time they just look... bad. Whether someone cut them themself and botched it, or a hairstylist did it for you. Maybe they just don't fit your face how you want them to, or you can't seem to figure out how to style them right, and they keep fighting back, and you're just tired of it. Plus, the growing-out process is a pain and a half.
You know the videos I mean
But when they look good? 1000% worth it.

I know I'm hyping up bangs a lot, but I do want to clarify, they are a lot of work. Constant styling, the wind becomes your worst enemy, and if you have curly hair like me... there's a huge possibility that they randomly choose to swoop a random way.
Most of the time, when I was inside my house, I had them up on a bang roller. Not only to try to keep their shape, but also just to keep them outttt of my face. A lot of people also report getting acne on their forehead from their bangs, and the product they use on their hair getting on their face.
I have a million more photos like this ->
There are sooooooo many styles of bangs, let's run through some real quick:
Curtain Bangs
These have blown up so much in the past few years, especially with Sabrina Carpenter's perfect curtain bangs, she's nearly trademarked them, although they were originally popularized by celebrities like Brigitte Bardot
Bottleneck Bangs
Honestly, a lower-maintenance bang, with heavy 70s inspiration, they blend a shaggier bang with some face-framing pieces on the sides. Very forgiving when in need of a trim, and the slight mess is part of the look
The Blunt Bang
Sooooooo c*nt. The precision and upkeep are everything, but the unlayered, straight, full bang looks so right on the right person, but she is also terrifying
Curly Bangs
Don't let them fool you. Curly bangs are just as hard as any other bang, while you may have more forgiveness with the length, getting them to curl and fall where you want is so difficult. Odessa A'zion is an exception, not the rule. They're so cute though ughh
Layered Bangs
Layered bangs have great volume, and you're more likely to get the classic curl when they have volume, as the hair isn't as weighed down as the blunt bang. Can also be very choppy! Whatever you want them to be
Shaggy Bangs
I'm not going to lie, a lot of these have veryyy small differences, but imagine Bottleneck bangs and Curtain bangs had a baby who was a hippie
Wispy Bangs
Wispy bangs can be pretty much any shape; this just refers to the density. Personally, I love them, you can still see some forehead, they look great long, curled, messy, literally, however
The Side Bang
She's baaaaackkkkkk. I heard something about a middle part side bang, which I'm very curious about... but the classic side bang is so 2000s and I NEED to see them blow up rn
Micro Bangs
They can range from a cm above the eyebrow to a cm below the hairline. They send a message, and I love them so much. They have similar energy to the blunt bang, yk?
Hepburn Bangs
A micro side bang. I think with the Audrey Hepburn movie coming out, we are going to see more of these, not just from Ariana Grande, but the fashion girlies too
V-Shaped Bangs
She's a vampire. I don't see these nearly enough. UGH, they're so fun and interesting, similar to the blunt bang but instead of being straight, they point down, almost as if following a widow's peak
Scene Bangs
Well... yes!! Ok 6arelyhuman!! I love them so much, and Scenecore is another look I really want to blow up again. It was so pivotal in the alternative scenes and is just incredibly iconic
Unfortunately, writing this has not helped me decide which wolf is winning, but if any of you are tempted to get bangs, I fully support and believe everyone needs them at some point in their life!!
Thank you so much for reading :3
Please let me know what you think!!
