Hello everyone, I am so excited to be back writing articles for Hysteria again! It's been too long, and I have way too many ideas of topics I want to write about. If you're new here, my name is Mila, and on Hysteria, I like to talk about riot grrrl, kinderwhore, and all things feminism, specifically as they relate to punk music. In today's (brief) post, I'll go over a few things I'm interested in discussing in the near future, as well as some concepts, I'd like to circle back to. If you want a sneak peek of what I'm covering on Hysteria for Fall 2026, you're in the right place. Let's begin!
☆ Album Reviews/Dissections
Last year on Hysteria, I talked about most of the typical riot grrrl/kinderwhore essential albums. Revolution Girl Style Now by Bikini Kill, American Thighs by Veruca Salt, Calculated by Heavens to Betsy, etc. However, there are still so many more out there to talk about: I've yet to discuss influential bands like Jack Off Jill, L7, and the Breeders, among many others. So, you can definitely expect me to continue talking about albums with feminist themes. It wouldn't be Hysteria if I didn't!
☆ Daisy Chain Fields
As I write this blog post, Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields festival is happening over in California. As you look at the flyer here, you might notice that many of the bands performing are total powerhouses in riot grrrl/female grunge, or just generally pretty big female artists right now. Although I don't really like Rodrigo and don't think the music she puts out is interesting, I think this was an excellent idea on her part! Thousands of dollars have been donated to various nonprofit organizations like the Center for Reproductive Rights, the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, Planned Parenthood, among several other organizations that benefit women, girls, and those with a uterus. There was also Grrrl Germs, a multimedia exhibit/installation that discussed and revisited all things punk feminism in the nineties. You'd be a sucker if you thought I wouldn't wanna talk about that! You can expect a blog post in the near future exploring what Daisy Chain Fields had to offer.
☆ Movie Reviews
I like to do a movie review every now and then, to spice things up. Since the movies I covered last year weren't very on theme with Hysteria, I'm looking into films that riot grrrl pioneers like Kathleen Hanna and Kat Bjelland were in, if only for very briefly. You can expect me to talk about movies like Not Bad for a Girl, the 1995 documentary on the grunge and riot grrrl scenes as they were blossoming.
☆ Video Games?
As I've stated before, and you probably were able to guess, I love feminist themes in all types of media, whether they appear in movies, music, art, theater, or literature, I want it! Video games are not the exception to this, either. I'm an incredible fan of indie story-led games with female protagonists, like Fran Bow, Sally Face, Little Misfortune, American McGee's Alice, and What Remains of Edith Finch. I would love to devote a Hysteria post either to a specific video game with lots of feminist themes present or to highlighting a couple of games that flew under the radar for many people. On a side note, I think I might be so obsessed with the American McGee's Alice franchise, and just Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in general, that I will probably dedicate an entire blog post just to talking about how references to the classic children's tale pop up in albums like Hole's Pretty on the Inside and Babes in Toyland's Fontanelle.
☆ Closing Remarks
Well, thank you for reading this very brief first post about what you can expect from Hysteria this upcoming semester! I'm extremely excited to be back for another year of revolution-girl-style-now. I hope this got you excited to read my future posts as well. I'll be posting every single Tuesday at 12 pm.
