Lorde has officially released her long-awaited lead single "What Was That". In the past few days, Lorde called her fans to Washington Square Park, where she showed up with the rumored producer of her fourth album, Blood Orange. They played the single for all the fans and filmed the music video for the song.

The song is more similar to the songs on her album Melodrama, with a synth-pop sound. The lyrics also seem to reference aspects of the Melodrama era, like
"MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up." She has said that if the Melodrama era were a substance, it would be MDMA. She references an "Indio haze" in the

song, reminding listeners of her melodrama album cover and aesthetic. The song seems to reflect this time in her life and her figuring out how to move on. The sound is more mature, but also stays true to the original sounds of Lorde that her fans know and love.
