Winter Whimsy

This Winter marks my second Winter spent in Chicago. I would like to consider myself an expert at navigating the cold, since Winter is my favorite season, but sometimes I have no motivation to get out of my warm bed. Nonetheless, I still try my best to wake up with a positive attitude, acknowledging that waking up is a joy in itself. Even when my phone tells me it feels like -10 degrees outside.

I try to live a whimsical life, both physically and mentally. Choosing to live life as a crossroads between Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada has given me the perfect blueprint for Winter, and life in general, especially in Chicago. Over the past two years, I have made it my mission to experience the city as if I were in a movie, and I believe I have mastered living life whimsically.

Step One

Listen to this playlist at home, while reading my blog, and especially while walking around the city. Jazz rap has become a staple for my city survival guide. It combines my love for jazz with the unique production of rap. Purchasing Marshall IV Headphones and the Marshall Emberton II Speaker (thanks to my boyfriend for gifting it to me) has been one of the most gratifying purchases of my entire life. I feel like I am in a movie every day!

Step Two

Dress like you are in a show or movie. Taking style inspiration from my favorite characters in a sitcom or romcom helps me feel a bit more magical. Lately, I have been channeling Elaine Benes and Andy Sachs. Something about the effortless '90s silhouettes makes somewhat meaningless days feel more put-together and entertaining. Dressing like this does not need to cost millions. Checking local thrift stores is a great way to find timeless and eccentric pieces.

Step Three

If you live your life within a two to five-block radius and still live a wonderful life, I commend you. However, I have learned that remaining whimsical in Chicago winter means venturing out of your burrow and comfort zone. Exploring new neighborhoods, stores, restaurants, museums, and even venturing out of Chicago for an overnight trip or weekend can make your return all the more satisfying…and whimsical.

With love and warmth,

Kierstyn
