My three most anticipated albums of the year are:
Sexistential by Robyn
Worst Girl in America by Slayyyter
This Music May Contain Hope. by Raye
If I was including unconfirmed albums in this list it would look a lot different. I’ve been waiting for a new album from Isaiah Rashad for almost five years now, and for all of those five years, I’ve been eagerly awaiting his next project. The thought that there even might be an Isaiah Rashad album released this year is enough to skyrocket whatever that project would hypothetically be to the top of my ‘most anticipated’ list. However, while he has been hinting at an album, there has been no official announcement. I continue waiting.
Luckily for me, the incredible upcoming albums that I listed are my most anticapted albums of the year are confirmed! Luckily (or unluckily, we will see) for me, all three of these albums come out on the same day: Friday, March 27th. All three of these artists are deep into their respective album roll-outs right now, which also means that they are currently releasing new singles. Robyn’s singles for her new album were her first solo releases in eight years, and they’re perfect. Out of the three, my favorites are Dopamine, a track that evokes all of the confusion of a new crush, and Sexistential, the album’s title track and Robyn’s silly recount of trying to get laid while taking IVF in order to get pregnant. As for Slayyyter’s new album, the first five songs have been released as singles now, and each one has made me excited. My favorite of them so far is CRANK, the album’s third single and original viral sensation. It’s loud and unashamed and extremely catchy. Slayyyter is an artist who consistently evolves, making each album better than the next. I’m very excited for the full thing. On the other hand, when Raye released her first single for This Music May Contain Hope., it wasn’t even known that it was a single. She hinted at things, but the album announcement came a full four months later. The song is called Where Is My Husband!, and if you’ve been on social media in the last third of a year, you’ve probably heard it. Raye had been performing and teasing music that leads her in a jazzier direction than her last project, her debut album, the more R&B forward My 21st Century Blues. She kept the stylistic choice of putting a period at the end of the album title, though, which I enjoy. Where Is My Husband! was the song that officially marked this slight change in genre; it made me even more excited to hear the album.

On Friday, February 27th, Raye released the second single from This Music May Contain Hope.: Nightingale Lane. The album is a dramatic look back at a love lost. The songs opening words are Raye saying, ‘This is a song about the greatest heartbreak I have ever known.’ In the song, she laments losing the love that her ex-partner gave her. She croons over swelling violins and drums that sound like they were recorded by an orchestra (which I feel safe saying that they probably are.) The song is Bond-movie theme song worthy
If real yearning needs to make a come back in music, I feel like this kind of extremely dramatic, heart-broken, reminiscent song deserve to as well. Raye pours so much emotion into her voice always, but she’s especially evocative on this song for me. I think its because I haven’t heard her sing in the strained and emotional way she does when she sings the lyrics, ‘Although we never made it / Stranger, you showed me it’s true / I’m capable of loving someone / The way I love you.’ She conveys how hurt she is so well, especially because these specific lyrics ramp up the tempo and the intensity of the song. The rest of the song is beautiful, but its awesomeness is almost overshadowed by the fact its used to ramp up to this grand chorus. Nevertheless, the build is absolutely worth it. Raye is an incredibly talented singer. She has a really strong, really gorgeous voice, and Nightingale Lane is a great excuse to show that off. If this is how she sings on a single, I’m so excited to hear the rest of the album.
The way Raye sings the chorus, ‘I tell myself / I dare myself / To go on, just say it / Somebody loved me once,’ reminds me so much of how she sings the lyrics, ‘So I’ll take / This front row seat / And baby, baby / You can go ahead / Cry those / Oscar winning tears,’ in her song Oscar Winning Tears. It feels like an intentional nod to that particular song’s dramatics, especially because it’s been a big song that Raye has made a jazzier arrangement for, and has been performing that arrangement for festivals and shows as she ushers in this new era of sound for herself. All in all, Raye continues to command my attention, and make me so excited to watch where she’s going to go next. I could not be more excited for the full album!
