The cries of 12-year-old girls could be heard around the world this morning as the news of Justin Bieber’s arrest made headlining news. (Really, America? Really?) Charged with a DUI, resisting arrest, and driving on an expired license, Bieber may face up to six months in jail. Here’s his bright-eyed mugshot:
In light of this latest pop culture scandal, I decided to compile a list of some other great celebrity scandals that rocked the country throughout the years. Here are my top 5:
5) Milli Vanilli Caught Lip Syncing
It’s so common nowadays that we hardly bat an eye, but back in 1990 it was preposterous and offensive. When Milli Vanilli performed their hit “Girl You Know It’s True” for MTV, the track began skipping, revealing that they had not actually been singing the song. Not a huge deal. The speculation afterwards is what revealed that the two men of the group, Morvan and Pilatus, had not even sung the songs on their record! They were consequentially stripped of their Grammy Award, and the world may never know if it weren’t for the technical difficulty that day if we ever would have found out it was all a lie.
4) Britney Spears’ Breakdown
She’s in the midst of a glamorous comeback as we speak, but a few years ago Britney was in the tabloids almost every week for a new bizarre antic. After having two kids with then-husband Kevin Federline (Remember that guy?), she starred in a failed reality TV show, walked through gas station bathrooms barefoot, attacked a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella, and, of course, shaved her head. After police, firemen, and helicopters surrounded her house in a 90-minute standoff where Britney locked herself with her kids in a bathroom, she was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Then everything made a lot more sense.
3) The Beatles Are More Popular Than Jesus
During an interview with English reporter Maureen Cleave in 1966, John Lennon gave a statement that would ultimately lead to the band’s demise. Stating, “We’re more popular than Jesus now,” religious groups in the States boycotted the band’s tour. Lennon gave a public apology and the band canceled their tour, and eventually split up three years later.
2) The Michael Jackson Pedophile Scandal
Ah yes, I believe we were all around for that one, right? Jackson was accused of molesting children in 1993 and again ten years later in 2003. The first case was settled out of court for an astounding $20 million dollars. Jackson won the second trial in 2003, but his reputation was forever tarnished.
1) Elvis Presley’s Pelvis
The world was a different place back in 1956, okay? While performing his top hit “Hound Dog” on the Milton Berle Show in June of ’56, Elvis slowed the song down and gyrated his hips in time to the music. “Elvis the Pelvis” became the new catch phrase and people were so appalled by his overt sexual performance that when he later performed on The Ed Sullivan Show he was filmed from the waist up.
Talk about a hunka hunka burning scandal.
