Always a Witch – Review

Man falls in love with a woman -> his mom sentence her to die -> the father shoots his son to separate them. What a sweet story isn’t it? that’s the story that Netflix released on February 1st, 2019. Always A Witch is the story of Carmen, an Afro-Colombiana slave who is burned at the stake in colonial Cartagena. Her crime? Having fallen in love with a white man. She is accused by her lover’ mother of practicing magic to make her son fall in love with her. Because for her there’s no way in hell that her son could’ve fallen in love with a black slave without being under a spell. Her lovers’ father on the other side decides to kill his own son before seeing him with a slave. Carmen thinks that he is dead and makes a pact with a magician to save him. You can scroll and see the trailer, but what is key to know is that she is sent to 2019.

I do recognize that the master falls in love with the slave is a very common story. But this one is different because this story is in Latin America. Is one of the few times that you get to see Africans in Latin America. The other thing that makes it different is that Carmen gets to see how things were going to change and that knowledge puts her in a very hard position. When she is in 2019, she gets to experience equality (at a certain extent) of gender and race. One of my favorite parts is when she goes back and tells her mother in law that she is a slave just like her. She is a slave of her husband, her religion and her life. She also gets to go to college and meet a group of incredible and nice people who teach her how to use a cellphone. The show has love, suspense, and very funny scenarios. As you can tell I really enjoyed this show so much so that I finished in a day.

Un hombre se enamora de una mujer -> su madre la condenó a morir -> el padre le dispara a su hijo para separarlos. Qué historia tan dulce verdad? esa es la historia que Netflix lanzó el 1 de febrero de 2019. Siempre Bruja es la historia de Carmen, una esclava afro-colombiana que se quema en la hoguera de la Cartagena colonial. Su crimen? Haberse enamorado de un hombre blanco. La madre de su amante la acusa de practicar la magia para hacer que su hijo se enamore de ella. Porque para ella no hay manera en que su hijo pudiera haberse enamorado de una esclava negra sin estar hechizado. El padre de su amante por otro lado decide matar a su propio hijo antes de verlo con un esclava. Carmen piensa que su amor está muerto y hace un pacto con un mago para salvarlo. Puede subir y ver el tráiler, pero lo que es importante saber es que Carmen es enviada al 2019.

Reconozco que el amo se enamora de la esclava es una historia muy común. Pero esta es diferente porque esta historia está basada en América Latina. Es una de las pocas veces que ves Africanos en América Latina en television. La otra cosa que lo hace diferente es que Carmen llega a ver cómo iban a cambiar las cosas y ese conocimiento la pone en una posición muy difícil. Cuando ella está en 2019, experimenta la igualdad (en cierta medida) de género y raza. Una de mis partes favoritas es cuando regresa y le dice a su suegra que ella tambien es una esclava. Es esclava de su marido, de su religión y de su vida. Carmen tiene la oportunidad de ir a la universidad y conocer a un grupo de personas increíbles y amables que le enseñan cómo usar un teléfono celular. La serie tiene amor, suspenso y escenarios muy divertidos. Como pueden ver, me gustó tanto esta serie que la terminé de ver en un día.
