Britney Spears is Nearly Free

Following a court hearing on September 29th, pop superstar Britney Spears’ thirteen year long battle for her basic freedom is one step closer to finally ending. Los Angeles judge Brenda Penny suspended her father, Jamie Spears, as the conservator of her estate.

Jamie Spears has controlled Britney’s person, estate, and finances with an iron fist since the conservatorship was implemented in 2008, following her highly covered public breakdown. Since then, she has been fighting to finally bring it to an end.

Penny stated, “I do believe that the suspension of Jamie Spears is in the best interest of the conservatee, Britney Spears,” citing the “toxic environment” in her decision.

The ruling comes just three months after the horrifying testimony from Britney Spears where she recounted being forced to have an IUD implanted into her arm to prevent future pregnancies, forced to take Lithium, forced to be admitted into a mental ward, and forced to perform on stage against her will, all amongst many other alarming accusations.

In theory, conservatorships are meant to manage the financial affairs and daily life of individuals with severe mental limitations or complications from old age; for example, diseases like Alzheimer’s. Most people under these conservatorships cannot perform basic functions and certainly are not able to hold a job. However, Britney has completed the Piece of Me Residency (the most successful Las Vegas residency show), released numerous chart-topping albums, raised her two children, and has continued to be a pipeline to funnel more money into her fathers pocket. This exploitation of her success for the financial gain of her father, the other members of the conservatorship, and even her own family is the exact reason why Britney Spears has refused to work since 2017, until the removal of her father as her conservator.

Matthew Rosengart, attorney for Britney, stated, “Mr. Spears cannot be in my client’s life for one more day.”

Despite the removal of her father, the conservatorship on Britney Spears is still in effect. The court has named public accountant, John Zabel, as the temporary conservator to provide a smooth transition when the conservatorship is formally ended after thirteen years at the next hearing scheduled for November 12th.

Rosengart has also raised his intentions to follow an investigation into Jamie Spears’ conduct as conservator, including the amount of money he claimed for salary as conservator and aiming for a potential charge of conservatorship abuse.

Newly released documentaries such as, “Controlling Britney Spears,” by The New York Times have revealed Britney Spears’ long disapproval of her father as her conservator. She mentions his past alcoholism, restraining orders filed by his grandchildren for abuse, and his overall “obsession” with controlling and exploiting her life.

Over a hundred protesters in support of the #FreeBritney movement shutdown the street outside of Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles during the hearing. Many carried signs calling the abolishment of guardianships and chanted “Jamie for jail!”

Matthew Rosengart also spoke to the ecstatic crowd following the hearing proclaiming, “Britney Spears’ career is firmly back in her hands.”

The next court hearing will be November 12th, where the conservatorship is planned to once and for all be terminated.
