A few weeks back, songwriter Dominic Fike announced his third studio album, "How to Quit Smoking." Fike has been releasing songs from the album on his website, dominicfike.com, while producing it on the road during his Comedy, Tragedy, Parody tour. Chicago was the 7th destination and marked the halfway point of the tour, and I was lucky enough to get tickets. Fike packed Chicago's Aragon Ballroom to the brim. Opening for Dominic Fike was Chicago comedian and actor Carmen Christopher. Christopher is most known for his roles in The Bear and English Teacher. I've been to plenty of concerts, but I've never seen a non-music opener. As of writing this, Dominic Fike has released only one song, "Wallflower," from "How to Quit Smoking," which I'm a huge fan of. Fike opened his set with "How Much Is Weed?" from his second studio album "Sunburn". "Sunburn" is the album that got me into Dominic Fike, so I was excited to hear this one. Apart from that, he played a whopping 28 songs over a 2-hour set. Highlights included "Double Negative (Skeleton Milkshake)," "Westcoast Collective," "Mona Lisa," Politics & Violence," "Frisky," and "Babydoll." Fike's set at Lolla, I've wanted
to see him live. The crowd for this set didn't disappoint either. Due to Fike's recent rise in popularity on TikTok, I was worried that this would be a large majority of "larpers" or bandwagons, but I was proven wrong. Everyone was loud and knew most of the songs.
Dominic Fike released his first studio album, "What Could Possibly Go Wrong," in July 2020. Previously, he released "Don't Forget About Me, Demos," which includes fan favorites such as "3 Nights," "Babydoll," and "Westcoast Collective." In my opinion, "What Could Possibly Go Wrong" really solidified Fike as an artist. "Politics & Violence" and "Why" remain fan favorites today. Fike's second studio album "Sunburn" includes 15 songs that don't miss. This is my personal favorite album from him. "Sunburn" showcases a variety of emotions, and I love his use of guitar throughout the album. I can't get enough of the heavy distortion used in "Ant Pile." "Sunburn" also includes "Think Fast" featuring Weezer! I love it when artists from not-so-distant genres come together to make a song. On the topic of collaboration, Dominic Fike is known for collaborations with a number of artists, including Remi Wolf, Paul McCartney, Justin Bieber, and the Euphoria soundtrack, to name a few. In particular, Remi Wolf's "Photo ID" is my favorite, and Fike's rap-like style really complements Remi Wolf's fun, playful pop.
Dominic Fike's "How To Quit Smoking" is set to release on October 8th. I'm excited to hear the album in its entirety. "Wallflower" is currently one of my favorite releases of the year, and I really hope Fike continues to head in this soft rock/guitar music direction.
