conformity gate was beautiful

on January 7th, 2026, conformity gate was proven to be untrue. the actual truth was that the ending to a ten-year old beloved series had just been poorly written (possibly by chatgpt).

nonetheless, i believe conformity gate showcased all that was good about television, the internet, and humanity at large.

after the first and second volume of stanger things's final season were released, fans found large plot holes and continuity errors in the show. props changed color from scene to scene, dates didn't line up, and characters weren't acting like their usual selves. then, in one scene, lucas looks directlyinto the camera and says, "i don't believe in coincidences."

theories on what was actually going on and how everything would go down spread like wildfire. some backed with so much evidence that it "felt like a spoiler." all of these people picking apart every scene, word, and hint from the entire series. then on new year's eve, the finale dropped.

i won't get into spoilers, but the ending can be summarized as trite and boring. many people described it as marvel-level writing. all hope was lost, but then a new theory gained momentum: conformity gate.

the theory basically said that the ending was a false ending, and that the real ending would be released later on. it all made sense, and it seemed like netflix was playing along too.

alas, we were mistaken.

however.

the ability for media to bring people together. those said people reading the show closely and critically. using that information to basically compose their own stories. being "debunked," but still being seen as more legitimate than the canon ending. it was one of those times when the internet truly felt like a community.
