Devastating one-line lyrics ever written

(according to me)

Fade Into You - Mazzy Star

“I look to you, and I see nothing.”

Reaching out to someone after so many years, knowing they have changed, they have grown, they are not who they used to be, at least not in the way you need them to be. They were once yours, but not anymore. Looking at someone you love and care about so much, only to feel emptiness and not warmth.

Strangers - Celeste

 “From strangers to friends

Friends into lovers

And strangers again?”

Well, stating the obvious. The one person you never thought would turn into a stranger has. It is the complete cycle of a relationship that has ended. You end, not as enemies or acquaintances but just strangers. The question mark implies that we are really strangers. Is this really over? Almost in disbelief. How can two people who loved each other so much go back to pretending they never did?

Fourth of July - Sufjan Stevens

“What could I have said to raise you from the dead?”

This is not a line that comes out of mourning a loss, but it's regret that wraps around mourning. When you leave things unsaid or regret something you said. You replay those conversations, wonder what you could have said to make things better. It's a hope that, maybe, if you'd said the right thing, things would have been different. Words can fix arguments, but they won't bring someone back.

I know it's over - The Smiths

“And I know it's over, still I cling.”

You know, you have to let go. Your relationship has ended, but a part of you still wants to hold on. There is something so humiliating about it. It's you being true to yourself. You see the end, but you cannot let go. No confusion, no mixed signals, but you aren't ready to let go, not yet. It's not romantic, it's sad.

The Scientist - Coldplay

“Tell me you love me, come back and haunt me.”

This feels like the reassurance you need right now, not willing to give up on your loved one and wanting them to be back. It's the feeling when you know someone cannot stay, but you do not want them to disappear from your life. You want them to be lurking. It's the fear of being forgotten and the desire to have them back, because when they leave, they will move on, while you will keep replaying their memories.

Working for the Knife - Mitski

“I always thought the choice was mine

And I was right, but I just chose wrong.”

When you look back and realize the choices you made did not lead to where you hoped. You have no one to blame but yourself. It is realizing you had the power to make the choice, but that choice hurt. You worked so hard chasing the one thing that turned out to be bad for you. Rather than regret, you are acknowledging your decision and mistake.
