"El Mundo Bailará" - Bad Bunny

At the end of the month of September, it was announced that Bad Bunny will be performing for the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show. It was unreal how much controversy, debate, and backlash came up because of this announcement. It definitely had to do with the fact that during this time and months prior, public discourse was heavily focused on political tensions surrounding Latino belonging/identity in real life and mainstream media.

Apart from that point in time, all that was happening then and now, Bad Bunny didn’t let that stop him from continuing to share updates about his upcoming performance. He also is using his platform to celebrate more of his Puerto Rican culture. With this in mind, I’m not here to go into further detail about how people may feel about Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl, and comments like "he doesn’t deserve it" or hate on him being Latino, or any political issues, plus immigration policies that’s going on surrounding it. Because I frankly do not care what these negative people have to say, the decision has been made and he will be there. What I care about the most and the reason for why I’m writing about this, is to showcase the positivity that surrounds what Bad Bunny is doing to market a beautiful message.

Friday, January 16th, Bad Bunny dropped a

Super Bowl commercial titled, “El Mundo Bailará”, or "The Whole World Will Dance". In this video, Bad Bunny showcases his song “BAILE INoLVIDABLE” from the album Debi Tirar Mas Fotos (DTMF) while dancing with all kinds of people. By this, I mean you can see each person dancing with him, look and dress differently; there's diversity and different ages, individuals from all walks of life. And the best part of it all is that not only do they have a second on the screen, they have about 10-15 seconds before they come all together in the end.

Now for the meaning behind this video, there can be a lot of interpretations such as, no matter who you are or where you come from the one thing we all have in common is dancing. And because of that, it seems as if Bad Bunny is telling the audience to see what they could be missing out if they stay with the negative hate-- why not go on a dance with him, with everyone?!

More aside from this, funny enough, there’s been videos made with context such as, “you have X number of days to learn Spanish,” basically hinting that you won’t understand what Benito is singing, and if you’re curious to know, then learn the language just in time. When I take a look at these videos, I do laugh and think to myself (as cheesy as it could sound for others) “you know what, I also agree”. I even start to think “wow I’m thankful to be Latina, to know Spanish, and when the day comes to see this performance, hear every song and feel a part of the event, within the most American sport.” And then after viewing the commercial, I feel even more glad about the message he is spreading. Such a legendary moment for all Puerto Ricans of course, and in general Latinos too. I am 100% sure that this will be the most viewed halftime show, maybe those watching will be only for this performance (like me), and that’s amazing.

Other artists performing for the Super Bowl LX (Sunday, February 8th) are:

  • National Anthem: Charlie Puth

  • Pregame Entertainment: Brandi Carlile and Coco Jones

  • Opening: Green Day
