Friendly Hello and Introduction!
Hello hello! I hope you're all taking care of yourselves and doing well this afternoon. I believe that it's important to support your local music scene and to also support small artists. So, I wanted to share the music of my good friend Felix. I mentioned his work in my last blog near the tail-end, but I thought an artist spotlight for his work is deserving. I asked him a few questions about his inspirations and upcoming projects! :^)

Q&A With Felix!
Felix is a small artist from Seattle, with 31.5K monthly listeners on Spotify; he has been creating and publishing music since 2012, and also posts guitar cover videos across multiple social media platforms. Felix has a wide range of music projects, from Compost Girl, to Deafgazer, to upcoming project Chinless, and of course, music under his own name.
✿ What genre would your music fall under?
"I struggle with finding a genre descriptor for my music, not in a pompous, elitist way, but there are so many genres I find inspiration in that I use to write my songs. The closest genre I can gravitate towards is Singer/Songwriter, because of the intimacy and vulnerability of some of the lyrics I write. But I haven't seen any videos of Bob Dylan doing black metal Tremolo picking so maybe another genre might be fitting.
The genres that are most prevalent in my writing as of late are acoustic, metal, and shoegaze, with some recent exploration into screamo, black metal, and the bedroom pop aesthetic.
Ever since I released my first album, a big part of my writing process is the concept of "resonance," which I try to portray through the melodies I write in my guitar parts. I don't consider myself a vocalist but rather lend my voice to contribute to an overall emotion I want conveyed through the layers of melodies I record.
Whether alternate tunings are used to increase the sustain of important notes, or high gain textures to increase the pressure of the song, I find that resonance can be achieved by writing lyrics that reflect an emotional vulnerability and a song that can take the words metaphorically and amplify it through melodies."
✿ What are some of your biggest inspirations when creating music? "My biggest inspirations for the music I make are horror movies, Vocaloid, "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield, pretty much any Studio Ghibli soundtrack, "Ashes Against the Grain" by Agalloch, "Ordinary Corrupt Human Love" by Deafheaven, "the Sound of Perseverance" by Death, "Hurtbreak Wonderland" by World's End Girlfriend, and "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls.
These are all collectively very emotional journeys through their respective musical/artistic landscapes, and I find that as an emotional writer, writing in a way that makes the progression of a story feel natural instead of forced is critical in portraying intimate feelings like grief, despair, and hope.
I reference these inspirations on a very frequent basis and study their impact on my feelings and how they resonate with me so I can better understand what my music needs to resonate with whoever listens to it.
If you look into what's going on in Iris in the studio, there's so much inspiration to be found with how they achieved the sound they got. The whole song is based on a guitar chord progression in a wicked tuning (five of the six strings are the same note), and in that same song, there is an orchestra with essentially a breakdown section that leads into a slide guitar solo - not to mention the mandolin playing over the guitar the whole song.
It's so everywhere, but at the same time, it hits the soul just right. I want to have that approach with my music with the things that have influenced me the most."
✿ Are you planning on releasing anything new soon?
"Right now, what I have figured out is my solo album (There is Nothing Waiting for You at the End) will be out by Valentine's Day, 2025, and whatever I can manage to finish by then I'll try to have out as well!"
✿ Anything else you'd like to share?
"I have a cat named Coal. He is very silly, and he makes me very happy."
