Favorite Fashion Moments of 2017
As previously stated in a blog post, 2017 has been an unforgettable year for music, fashion, and art overall. I strongly believe this year has been especially powerful in representing the creative youth and potential that lies within our generation. The youth of this generation is being represented by the music and fashion that is constantly developing and shaping the culture. In 2017, not only were multiple young artists launching albums and creating hits, but this year has been a milestone for fashion. 2017 was the year of remarkable collaborations and creations, thus creating history in fashion.
One of the most insane collaborations this year was the Supreme X Louis Vuitton. This collaboration is a perfect example why 2017 was a historical year for fashion. Most people never expected that one day, an originally known skateboard brand would collaborate with one of the most prominent and well known high fashion brands in the world. The Supreme x Louis Vuitton collection included pieces such as t-shirts, hoodies, and baseball jerseys, track pants and jeans, various pieces of outerwear like parkas and denim jackets, down to several different accessories like belts and bags. Not only did the collection have dozens of different styles of clothing and accessories but it even included pajamas, blankets, pillows, and more. This signature LV print is recurring and featured widely throughout multiple styles and pieces in this collection. The overall collaboration was astounding to many people because of the fact that the two brands included in this collab each have a different aesthetic and yet made it work by creating such a unique variety of clothing for the collection.
The collaborations this year were endless, from collabs such as Uniqlo x JW Anderson, to my personal favorite this year, Nike’s “The Ten” Sneakers collab with OFF-WHITE designer Virgil Abloh. “The Ten” sneakers featured Nike’s most iconic shoes such as, the classic AF1, Blazers, and both the Airmax 90 and 97. Virgil Abloh dominated this year and made history in fashion himself and for his brand. Not going to lie, some of my favorite collabs this year featured a lot of OFF-WHITE such as the KITH x OFF-WHITE “OFF-PALETTE” Collection and the Levi’s Made & Crafted FW17 collection, which I both think were executed immaculately.
When it came to collaborations, not only did various designers and brands collab but as did many artists. The renowned Rihanna did a collab with PUMA and dropped multiple collections including clothing and shoes. The Fenty x Puma collections include numerous styles of outerwear as well as accessories and more. Rihanna created a retro yet futuristic look while incorporating themes of leather, velour, and suede into various colorful yet fine pieces. A$AP Rocky also teamed up with GUESS to bring back a vintage theme with timeless pieces such as overalls, bell bottom jeans, and denim jackets. Speaking of rappers, Travis Scott recently did a collab with Nike and dropped his very own pair of Air Force 1’s with subtle yet detailed oriented features including colorful reflective detailing and removable Swoosh logos.
Not only has 2017 brought us collaborations that will go down in fashion history, but many brands and designers have been working diligently to drop unique pieces and formidable collections. Being from Chicago, I admire Chicago based brands and support their businesses as much as I can. Chicago based brands such as RSVP Gallery and DBM have dropped several exceptional pieces/collections that proved the talent that the city of Chicago possesses.
This year, Joefreshgoods, creator and designer of DBM, has been on a roll. Joefreshgoods dropped a collection early this year that sold out, called “Thank You Obama” with multiple dope pieces dedicated to Obama’s impact through his presidency and even pieces dedicated to Malia and Michelle Obama. Joefreshgoods also got to collaborate with Nike this year to drop a Bears themed collection featuring Bears Football jerseys, t-shirts, and hoodies. As did RSVP Gallery with Nike, hosting their AF-100 Pop Up Shop. Customers that attended the pop-up had the opportunity to create their own custom AF1s in the AF1 maker studio. During the pop-up there was an exhibition showcasing hundreds of AF1 different styles, with the chance to purchase some of the shoes during the “daily drops”. Not only is Chicago the home of notable brands and boutiques, but it is overall a city of talent in many aspects. I personally believe this year Chicago has been proving how much potential and talent really is rooted within our city.
The world of fashion is expanding every moment and creating history within each movement. It is a world of constant development and ideas. What are your thoughts on fashion in 2017?
