On a breezy night november twenty-fourth, two-thousand and twenty-four, my partner and I traveled to beautiful ukrainian village/west town area for a Great Area show. The show was anticipated to start very late so time was killed with a couple games in the lounge. The openers were very experimental and structureless with their live rhythms, and some improvised vocals. The sound of the venue was pretty loud as I got nearer to the stage (as one would expect) so coming prepared with earplugs was a good move. Both were very fluid in their performance and the reverb, echoey sounds sort of defined the ambience of the show.
One of the openers was Bone Study who has played at Empty Bottle in the past with Inga Copelaned in 2023. One of his most prominent words sung/rapped during his performance was “eat the rich” which is sort of with the times. He has a nice cohesive collection of his self-produced work on his Spotify platform. Coming to Great Area’s set, the visuals and back track quality were amazing and so pleasing to the eyes and ears. It had lots of projections of low budget recordings from an Iphone perhaps and some minimal 3D animations. It was unexpecting to see a solo performance without a band as I was expecting at least a drum set and the singer playing guitar. Nonetheless, their performance was very enticing and structurally sound.
Would I come to a show like this again? I absolutely would, however, I felt that the timing of the sets was a bit off as the openers had 1 hour sets and Great Area was on for much shorter (half an hour)! :(
I highly recommend going to a fun show at Empty Bottle (if you’re of age), during any time of the year. Whether it’s a small crowd or very packed, it’s such a lively experience going with a friend.
