The mastermind behind stankbugz Radio, a weekly music livestream that showcases local talent with an emphasis on featuring people of color, has his headquarters located on an unassuming residential street in the heart of the West Side. His living room is halfway converted into a recording studio; guests can spectate on a loveseat in the corner while featured acts perform in front of a green screen with a lighting and camera setup comparable to a Hollywood film setup. On the livestream, broadcasted on a wall-mounted TV in the living room and projected on a wall by the stairwell, the background visuals are trippy and kaleidoscopic and feature the stankbugz logo, which more closely resembles a bumblebee than a stink bug.

The three DJs featured on the livestream this evening, Scary Scary, DJ NEMESIS, and 0Hatred, barely had a chance to stretch their legs after getting off the plane from Los Angeles before they were promptly chauffeured from O’Hare Airport straight to the stankbugz studio to spin, using a Xone:96 analogue mixer and two turntables to mix hard house and techno music on vinyl. The three of them were selected by Resistance Corporation, a Chicago-based rave collection, as part of a curated lineup of skilled vinyl DJs for HARD WIRED, a hard house-focused warehouse rave held on Feb 28. I had the opportunity to interview two of them, Scary Scary and 0Hatred, in advance of another event that Resistance Corporation is organizing with an LA-based group called THROWING PARTY the following weekend in Los Angeles, a free party called “FRIED-DAY.”

  1. How about we begin this interview with a self-introduction?

0Hatred: “What up? I’m DJ 0Hatred. I produce some music, and I spin some records. I’ve been spinning records for about two years or so and producing music for like a decade. And I’m from Whittier, California, 562, baby.”

Scary Scary: “I am DJ Scary Scary, and I’m from Whittier, CA as well, born and raised. I’m also a producer – I’ve been making music for almost seven years now – and I’ve been spinning vinyl for about two years.”

  1. What genres do you like to play?

Scary Scary: “I spin mainly techno and deep house. I really like the late 90’s tribal techno sound.”

0Hatred: “Hard house, mainly. I dabble in a bunch of other little things, too, like jungle and freestyle. But I like to mainly do hard house because it’s local to where I’m from.”

  1. How do you feel about being in Chicago and working with Resistance Corporation?

Scary Scary: “I think being in Chicago is effing sick. I’ve never been here, but I have a lot of music that’s from here, and a lot of my favorite producers are from here. I’ve always had this idea of Chicago based on how they made music, and so far, it’s been pretty true to the sound. And it’s really cool to be working with Resistance Corporation. It’s cool to have that connection between different cities and to have that bonding during a time when there’s so much craziness happening in the world, you know?”

0Hatred: “It’s cool. I got love for Chicago. It’s my second time back. Resistance Corp is dope, that’s family. The music is good, the food is good, the people are good. It’s cold. Yeah, I’m happy to run it back with the homies, and then they’re coming to LA pretty soon, and we’re gonna throw a party together in like a week. That’s just dope.”

  1. This upcoming show with Resistance Corporation, Hard Wired, is going to be all hard house, a genre that was made in Chicago and refined in LA. What makes hard house music special to you?

0Hatred: “It’s the sh*t. It’s the best of everything ever combined. It’s like punk, but it’s also hip-hop, but it’s also rave. It’s super tweaked out, especially the LA sound. I really like the Chicago sound, though, cause it’s a lot deeper and groovier. You have a lot more funky samples and funkier synth lines. But then you get to LA, and it just gets tweaked out.”

Scary Scary: “What he said. I love hard house; hard house is really sick. I always have hard house tracks that I spin regularly. The culture and history of it is something that I really do I respect, not just in LA, but also in places like Mexico, South America, and Spain.”

  1. Can you tell us a little more about FRIED-DAY , and do you have any other projects that you'd like to promote?

0Hatred: “We’re doing a collaboration with Resistance Corporation and another group called THROWING PARTY. It’s going to be a free party, and we’re gonna throw a party, and it’s gonna be cool, and there’s going to be loud music, and… It’ll be cool. And I dropped a CD the other day called ‘0Hatred’s Underground’ that’s cool, too. I’ve been selling it at parties."

Scary Scary: “I’m spinning for that event. Please come and have fun! Really good music and very talented DJs will be there. And listen to the music that I’ll be releasing soon on my Soundcloud page, scary______scary.”
