inside of me are two wolves. one of them is jacques demy, the other is hayao miyazaki.
miyazaki movies bring me so much comfort. the lush nature, childlike wonder, and joe hisaishi scores make me nostalgic for places i've never been. they're all full of heart, but don't ever cross the line of sappiness.
here are my top three:

my first ghibli movie. life-changing. adorable. no notes. i'm not sure how miyazaki is able to have such a good grasp of what it feels like to be a kid. this movie is about growing up, finding community, and slowing down. watch when you need a pick-me-up.

criminally. underrated. anyone who is a fan of miyazaki will know two things: he hates war, and loves planes. you can track either sentiment through a lot of his films, but porco rosso feels like a culmination of the two. tackles post-war guilt and grief in such a gentle way.
not to mention this fire quote: "i'd rather be a pig than a fascist."

basic, but idc! ending makes me cry every time i watch it. kind of gives me doctor who vibes. i think the magic of this movie is that i don't know what it's about. sure, it's about war and aging and love, but it is never grounded in any of these subjects. i can only really describe this movie as overwhelming.
note: thank you for reading the last blog post of the fall. make sure to follow our instagram @todeyi.show ! despite being busy, i genuinely look forward to writing to you all once a week. i CANNOT believe we only have one more semester together :')
see you next year!
