Hispanic Feminism, “Cable Girls” Review / Feminismo Hispano, “Las Chicas del Cable”

Cable Girls is a critical T.V series based on Spain in 1928. The times when Spain was oppressed by a dictator and women were an accessory for men. This T.V series follows four women who fight for their rights and independence while keeping up with relationships, friendships, and the modern workplace.

It was my first semester at UIC when a classmate told me about the series. I got hooked up with the first episode. The main character, Lidia, is sent to work at the first telephone company in Spain to steal money to save her life. Everything gets complicated when she finds out that her ex-lover is the director of the company. You may think that is not a big deal but he is not just an ex-lover, he is THE ex-lover, her first love. Lidia maintains her character all the time and I can only think that if that was me, I would have a panic attack and ruin the whole plan. Spoiler alert: with her strong presence and attitude, Lidia gets almost everything she wants. At least in the first season ——————————–

Las Chicas del Cable es una serie crítica de televisión basada en España en 1928. Los tiempos en que España era oprimida por un dictador y las mujeres eran un accesorio para los hombres. Esta Serie de TV sigue a cuatro mujeres que luchan por sus derechos e independencia mientras se mantienen al día con las relaciones, la amistad y el lugar de trabajo moderno.

Fue mi primer semestre en la UIC cuando una compañera me contó sobre la serie. Me emocione con el primer episodio. La protagonista Lidia es enviada a trabajar en la primera compañía telefónica en España a robar dinero para salvar su vida. Todo se complica cuando descubre que su ex amante es el director de la compañía. Puedes pensar que no es un gran problema, pero él no es solo un ex amante, el es EL ex amante, su primer amor. Lidia mantiene su carácter todo el tiempo y solo puedo pensar que si fuera yo, tendría un ataque de pánico y arruinaría todo el plan. Alerta de spoiler: con su fuerte presencia y actitud, Lidia obtiene casi todo lo que quiere. Al menos en la primera temporada.

The first three seasons are now on Netflix and there are rumors that the 4th season would be released next year. But if you think about it is in about a month or so. The wait is not going to be that long if you start watching it now. I fully recommend this series to everyone, North Americans and my Hispanic fellows. Netflix has the series in both English and Spanish among other languages but I recommend you to watch it with subtitles. I think nowadays we should explore other cultures and entertainment and the worst thing that can happen is that you would get used the Spanish accent and connotation.

Las primeras tres temporadas ahora están en Netflix y hay rumores de que la cuarta temporada se lanzará el próximo año. Pero si lo piensas es en aproximadamente un mes. La espera no será tan larga si empiezas a verla ahora. Recomiendo totalmente esta serie a todos, a los norteamericanos y a mis amigos hispanos. Netflix tiene la serie en inglés y español entre otros idiomas, pero te recomiendo que la veas con subtítulos. Creo que hoy en día deberíamos explorar otras culturas y entretenimientos y lo peor que puede pasar es que te acostumbrarás al acento y la connotación españoles.
