Hello all, my name is Sean: I am a junior, I am a psychology major, and this is my blog! Welcome. This is my third year in UIC Radio. I currently have a show called The Fruitbasket with my co-host Ray and have been serving on UIC Radio's e-board since Spring 2025, first as an Assistant Blog Director, and currently as Blog Director. In the spirit of being less of a fraud, I decided now was the right time to have a blog of my own. I wanted to take some time with this first post to explain what I'd like this blog to be, to share some of my thoughts surrounding writing, and what my inspirations are as well.

The name of my blog, Someday, is a reference to the popular Strokes song. My dad used to play it sometimes in the car in between arduous stretches of Pearl Jam and just even more Pearl Jam. I see it as my introduction into the music I love today. The word itself, "someday," serves as my ethos for life. Everything in this moment and all moments before feels and has felt intangible. There is no guarantee of success, of love, of happiness, and yet I continue to push for someday. Many things I want, the things I dream of, are off in that nebulous someday, which could be a call to wake up and take them now, but I don't think I'm ready for that yet. My goal with this blog is to explore these feelings that have governed my life for so long.

I used to write a lot of poetry in my later high school years and in my first year of college. I had a lot of sadness that I wasn't sure what to do with, so I decided to pour it into melodramatic free verses instead. I hope not to do that with this blog. When people ask me why I stopped writing, I tend to tell them it's because I lost inspiration. I think the deeper truth is that I realized I didn't have very much to say, and I wasn't writing to say anything. I want to find what I have to say.

My college career has been fairly devoid of writing, so I had to seek it out on my own. I've been a tutor at UIC's Writing Center for about 4 semesters now. I've also had the privilege of reading and editing so many of our blogger's works over the past year or so. The small bits of writing I have done in the past couple years have all been very academic, scientific papers-- very little expression allowed. At many points in my life, I had a great love of English, language, literature, and writing. In recent years, that love has dwindled, but it is still there, somewhere. I want to find that love again in my own way. I plan to mostly publish creative works here, whether that be personal narratives, poems or short stories. I would also like to take a look back at my previous writings to see what wasn't working, or if anything did.

I've always loved stream of consciousness style writing. I think Toni Morrison and William Faulkner exemplify this style. In terms of poetry, I'm a huge fan of Frank O'Hara and Richard Siken. I think what all four of these writers have in common is that they are not afraid to say what they want to say. Sometimes it is violent, sometimes provocative, but it is always methodical and true. They are able to maintain the delicate balance of restraint and detail. However, I take most of my writing inspiration from music. I truly believe Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest is one of the greatest writers of all time, and he has been hugely influential to me and the development of my writing style.
To anyone who may still be reading, thank you! I hope this gives you a little insight into my mind. Stay tuned for my next blog which may or may not be more interesting than this one.
