Recently on 4 CHI CITY RADIO, R&B and Hip Hop artist Jamell Pierre, came through with his latest single “Shake That”. Here’s a recap of his interview.
Name your top five favorite artists?
Michael Jackson – He is one of the most talented artist to ever live! His drive, his performance, his music, his dancing, he’s pretty much the heart and soul of music and my biggest influence.
Tupac – I loved Tupac’s approach to music and the way he was able to paint a picture of struggle and pain through the art of a song. His work ethic and ambition inspires me to represent something good in today’s music.
Kanye West – Kanye is the most creative artist out there today! I love how none of his albums sound the same and the fact that he’s able to reinvent himself every time around is genius. I’m very inspired by his live performances and how everything is strategically thought out and original!
Chris Brown – Chris Brown is the “Michael” of my generation. During high school, I spent those years listening to Chris Brown. And by us being so close in age, I was able to relate to his overall approach and perspective in his music. I’m definitely inspired by his way of not being limited to one genre, being creative, and his originality across the board.
Prince – I love Prince’s creativity and edge! He has always been one of my biggest inspirations. His music and energy has always been amazing through song and on stage!
What inspired you to become a singer/songwriter?
I was inspired to become a songwriter/hip hop artist about when I was 19. I was always talented at music but didn’t take it serious until I tore my ACL playing basketball in college! After having multiple injuries and idle time on my hands, developed a stronger bond with music. I always loved the thought of being able to express myself and tell my story. Music heals! I feel that music is the strongest form of power there is today because its so influential. I want to be a part of history knowing that my music and my character influenced at least one person for the better.
Tell us about one of your biggest accomplishments as an artist?
My biggest accomplishment as an artist would have to be performing “Black Hoodie” with Day Underscore and Ivan Ellis at the African Fest a couple years back. This song was made due Trayvon Martin’s death and we wanted to send a powerful message by coming up with this particular song. As we performed, there was a feeling of sadness and hope amongst the audience! It was such a powerful moment and I will always remember that!
What is something you want people to know about you as an artist?
I want people to know that my heart and soul flows through my music. I want people to dance, smile, laugh, cry, and to be able to feel what I was going through at that time. I write all of my music so I want the audience to develop a connection through my songs and through my performances. I want you to grow with me and see that it only gets better!
What do you hate & what do you love about Chicago?
The thing I hate most about Chicago is the violence that’s going on right now. Its going to take more than one person to change the youth outlook. Its going to take a whole village to take a stand and come together because we’re not doing anything but destroying our own kind and ourselves.
What I love most about Chicago is that its my home. My core support group stays in Chicago. I love that there’s a lot to do in the city and the fact that its a big melting pot. I grew up in the western suburbs so being around different ethnicities and different cultures plays a heavy role with the type of music I make and listen to.
