My Favorite Springtime Songs

Spring is finally in the air! As the semester comes to an end, the weather is warming up, the days are getting longer, and the need for the perfect spring soundtrack is stronger than ever. Whether you're taking a long walk along the lakefront trail or relaxing in the grass, we all need the perfect song for our springtime activities. Here are my top five favorite songs to listen to in the springtime.

  1. Sara - Fleetwood Mac

There is just something about "Sara" that feels so spring-like. This song makes me think of new beginnings, which is basically what spring is. The mellowness of this song is perfect for when the world is thawing out and recovering from a dreary winter. The dreamy background vocals and soft instrumentals will make you want to dance around in a field. I recommend listening to this one in the car with the windows down on a warm, sunny day for full effect.

  1. The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin

The opening lyrics to this song are literally "It is the springtime of my loving," so I obviously had to include it! From one of my favorite Led Zeppelin records, "The Rain Song" compares a love affair with the seasonal cycle. The song begins with gentle guitar strumming and slowly unfolds, becoming louder and more intense. I feel like "The Rain Song" perfectly captures the essence of the transition from winter to spring. At seven and a half minutes long, this song is perfect for a bike ride or a long stroll along the lakefront trail.

  1. Fat Old Sun - Pink Floyd

If you know me, you know that I could probably find the perfect Pink Floyd song for just about any occasion. Atom, Heart, Mother, in my opinion, is one of their best underrated records. Also, I obviously love it because there is a cow on the cover. Similar to "The Rain Song," "Fat Old Sun" starts off with a gentle acoustic guitar melody and slowly adds in drums and even a guitar solo near the end. The lyrics beautifully paint the scene of a nice, sunny day. "Fat, Old, Sun" makes me think of the smell of fresh-cut grass. This song is perfect for sitting in the grass and watching the clouds roll by.

  1. Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren

This classic song from the 70s is impossible not to sing along to. This song has that perfect mix of melancholy and brightness- like it's a song about a breakup but kind of in a happy way? Lately, I've been listening to this one on my walk to class, and it honestly puts me in a good mood. The groovy synth and piano riffs just feel right for spring. Throw this on while doing some spring cleaning, and you'll have the whole house spotless before you know it.

    1. This Must Be The Place - Talking Heads

Honestly, do I even have to explain this one? This song is a classic! It is such an effortlessly cozy song. "This Must Be The Place" will single-handedly take away those winter blues and give you a reason to live. Ok, that's dramatic... but also kind of true. The spunky synths will pretty much demand a dance in the sun. David Byrne just knows how to capture the feeling of comfort and joy in a song. "This Must Be The Place" is basically like a hug in song form. Truly perfect for any springtime occasion.
