Hey welcome back, I hope you all have had a great week or at least one that wasn't too stressful, as I had a bunch of papers to write up and ones I still have to do this weekend, but my idea for this blog came from when me and my future co-host Dan were coming up with a set of songs for our new Radio show that is AIRING RIGHT NOW GO LISTEN!!!!! (7pm Friday). So, we were just going through all of the bands that we were really into and one band that when I was sixteen vehemently insisted was the single best metal band of all time and looking back on it, I kinda cringe at my obsession over it as my music taste has changed a whole lot. I have a current love-hate relationship with this band because it got me deep into playing guitar and practicing because the instrumentals are very impressive, I will admit, but also the current state of the music that they’re producing solely relies on its legacy from the 90s.

Megadeth was founded by Dave Mustaine after getting kicked out of Metallica for a combination of his substance abuse and coarse personality clashing with the frontman James Hetfield. Mustaine went on to hire 2 jazz musicians, Chris Poland (lead guitar) and Gar Samuelson (drums) to make their first 2 albums, which I can admit are musically technical and impressive, probably due to the amount of cocaine that Mustaine was doing, but it just screams high school to me now relistening to some of the songs. The only consistent member of the band has been Dave Mustaine and the whole thing is kind of just his own personal project in spite of getting kicked out of Metallica, because the dude STILL talks about it to this day like 50 years after the fact, which is kinda funny to me.

I hate to say this because it's so damn cringy but he crafted this lone wolf, musical genius image which was just so unbelievably cool to me when I was impressionable and 16; but the reality of it after fangirling over the band for about a year or two made me realize that he’s kind of a man child. The more recent that I got into the discography the more and more that they just lost the quality they had from the late 80s to early 90s. On some albums. Mustaine just references his past songs that have been hits from that era which in my opinion is simply lazy writing, not to mention they play maybe the same 15 songs live off their album “Rust In Peace” or other one-off hits. NOT ONLY THAT Dave Mustaine believes in black magic and he refuses to play some of the songs off of their album “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying” because the lyrics include verses in Latin. That album was probably their best work, considering that it was the last time–with the exception of “The System Has Failed”–that Chris Poland played lead on one of their albums.

What really put the nail in the coffin that just made me drop the band entirely was the fact that for their last album before Mustaine retires, self-titled “Megadeth” which first, I dont even know why they made it their self-titled album because the song Set The World Afire from their album “So Far, So good…So What?” was originally supposed to be their self-titled track. Not only that they announced that this was going to be their last album of the year with an AI promotional video that was just so bad…however that's not even the worst part in my opinion. It's just that ALL of the songs on the album just lack lyrical substance of any sort, and a tone that makes the overall sound taste like sterile overproduced slop. And what was the cherry on top of the pile of sh*t that I just listened to? They did a cover… not just any cover… a cover of RIDE THE LIGHTNING BY METALLICA, WHY? It's because “he was the one who wrote it.” IT'S NOT A COVER IF YOURE THE ONE WHO WROTE IT DAVE!!!! Not only that but the cover is so sterile and bad that I just can't associate myself with anything that has that little effort put into it, making it only seem like a cash grab for the diehard fans to pad Mustaine's retirement.

Megadeth will always have a special place for giving me an outlet to learn arguably impressive techniques on guitar, and also for partly facilitating my love for metal, but I can't ignore the obvious facts that face me.

My now former g.o.a.t, Dave Mustaine, is officially washed…
