On Thursday, September 4, 2025, Indiana Fever star Caitlyn Clark announced via social media that her sophomore season as arguably the face of the WNBA was ended due to her reoccurring groin injury.

Clark hadn’t played since July 15, making only 15 appearances during the regular season. Despite her rare appearances, Clark's presence holds mega-star power that directly has impacted both the Indiana Fever and the WNBA as a whole in an increase of merchandise sales, attendance, and viewership.

According to Dan Zaksheske, Clark played in two games that aired on NBA TV this season, leading to 600,000 viewers. In five other games that she missed due to injury that were aired on the same network, the average fell to 357,000 viewers.

Since her rise to the top of the basketball world during her collegiate days at the University of Iowa, Clark's image has only grown in value as a result of her consistent scoring ability and humble image. Clark has not been in too many career-threatening controversies and tends to avoid creating conflict when it comes to post-game press conferences.

According to The Athletic, an economist estimated that Clark contributed to about 26.5% of the WNBA's total economic activity in 2024.

This generational and massive impact during her rookie year as a WNBA player led to experts predicting that she brings in potentially $1 billion to the WNBA in economic value.

As far as ticket sales go, Clark's absence has made Indiana Fever tickets plummet in price value from anywhere between 30-50 percent.

In her first four games of the season, Clark averaged 19 points, 9.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds including a triple-double (20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists) during the Fever's season opener against her friendly rival Angel Reese's Chicago Sky.

Prior to her groin injury, Clark had never missed a game in her collegiate career or her first year in the WNBA.

Although the WNBA's game attendance has remained strong despite league-wide super-star injuries, Clark's absence cannot be ignored for sport fans.

There was a time where the majority of sports fans had never seen a full WNBA game. Hashtags of WNBA players and highlights from games are being posted on the main pages of large sports networks more than ever before.

Personally, I have not seen as much WNBA apparel, viewers, and promotion as much as I've seen within the past two years. As a consistent NBA viewer, WNBA players have even become more associated with the NBA by being more included in their videogames, increase in ticket sales, and merchandise demand. Stars like Clark have led to the increase in media coverage, resulting in a larger audience engagement that has brought more revenue into the league.

As long as Clark comes back into the league healthy, the WNBA will continue to thrive and grow a lot faster than without her star power. Although the WNBA has grown as a whole with other players helping to push the league to popularity, Clark's economic and cultural impact on the basketball world is unavoidable and her return will break the internet for sports fans.
