Weekending

All right. I admit it. I love Sundays. I am aware that many people are not fond of Sundays due to the day that follows it, Monday. Mondays can be associated with pressure, fatigue, and a return to the daily grind. However, my appreciation for Sundays stems from the idea that Sunday marks the beginning of the week, setting the tone for the days to follow.

I was not always like this, take high school me for example. I viewed the weekend as a time to “rest for the week to come”. The weekend was also my safe place to hide from the world for a couple more minutes, which ended up increasing my fears and anxieties. Despite my efforts to escape them with my thoughts, I found myself focusing intensely on them.

Everything feels more possible on the weekend. I need to figure out how to stretch that feeling to the next five days.

Sunday should act a bit as the next episode in the current season of your life, willing you to forge ahead, episode by episode, throughout the week. Suppose the previous days are haunting you with the mistakes you made, the arguments you participated in, and the unpleasant nature of it all. In that case, you have the ability to leave them in the past, rather than the ability to change the past. Focusing your attention on realizing that you can make the upcoming week much more fulfilling will allow you to change for the better. Do not miscalculate the attitude for this week to be tiring, problematic, or even worse than the week before. If you enter the week with the mindset of “nothing will go well for me”, nothing will probably go well for you. Just as you cannot change the past, you cannot get ahead of the future.

If you take care of your weekend, the start of the week will put you at ease, rather than panic. The weekends are usually when we have the most free time, so we can create a few habits that we will carry out consciously, with intention, and repetition, so our brains are provided with a sense of security. Our brains love repetition, but only when it supports a fruitful life. Over the weekend, establish habits that will always be there to provide you with comfort and support.

  • Make a plan for a gentle waking ritual that comes naturally with your sleep cycle (stretching, moving around in bed to music, etc.)

  • Have the best breakfast possible (I’m partial to toast with honey and bananas)

  • Celebrate the little successes of the prior week that went unnoticed

  • Read something that will stick with you for a long time, something you resonate with (The Bible is my book of choice)

  • Cleanse and declutter your mind, allow your brain to rest from the vast amount of information you have consumed during the past week

  • Spray a scent that you associate with peace and freedom (Moroccan Oil Eau de Parfum is my pick)

  • Drink tea in the evening (I like chamomile and jasmine)

  • Take a warm bath filled with essential oils and bubbles

  • Open your window before bed, allow fresh air in

Let’s enjoy a great week together!

With Love,

Kierstyn
