Lorde finally released her comeback single after a long long wait. After the mixed reviews of her last album "Solar Power", lots of people were anticipating a release from Lorde to see if she could come back better than before. She had been teasing new music for a long time, but nothing actually ever came of it. Until, she randomly dropped a snippet of a new song on her TikTok. After a long wait, Lorde is finally back with her new song "What Was That". But did it live up to expectations?
Honestly, as soon as I listened to the snippet she posted, I knew it was gonna be a good song. And the song definitely did not disappoint. It feels similar to what we were used to on "Melodrama", her 2nd album. It really does feel like a proper return to form for Lorde, especially after her last album. The production is familiar while also being refreshing. I'm a huge fan of the synths how everything rises up to the climax of the song. Everything just builds on top each other, which makes for a really satisfying listen.
As always, Lorde shows off her unique lyricism yet again. She's always been good at storytelling and painting a picture in your head, especially in this song. I really like the line "MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up. We kissed for hours straight, well baby, what was that?". It's not clear whether or not she was actually doing MDMA in the back garden with this person, or if she's riding a high because of the time she's spending with them. I love it when artists add double meaning to their lyrics. In this song, Lorde is playing with the idea that doors close as you get older, even doors that you thought would stay open forever. Now she's left to think about a relationship that's left her and won't come back. It's an interesting but relatable message.
With that, I'm gonna go ahead and rate it 8/10. I think it's an addictive song with a lot of promising aspects, but it falls short in a few areas. For one, I think the final chorus could have benefited from having more energy or maybe a couple extra lines. An outro also would have been nice. Despite that, all of the praises I had still hold true. I think that she is on the right track with this next project (who knows if an albums coming or not). Hopefully we don't have to wait as long for the next song from Lorde. With that, I think I covered all the bases I wanted to. Thanks for reading this weeks post and I hope you have a good finals week!
