London-born singer-songwriter Raye has released the final single, Click Clack Symphony., off of her upcoming sophomore album, This Music May Contain Hope. The full album comes out next Friday, and I have been so excited for it since the first single, Raye’s now-viral hit Where Is My Husband? was released. Click Clack Symphony. features German composer Hans Zimmer. Zimmer was the perfect choice of feature; his sound blends really nicely with Raye’s signature dramatic, jazz-inspired sound.
Lyrically, the song is about Raye calling on her friends to help get her out of a fit of depression. ‘I call my girls and said, "SOS, pick a dress / Pick a time and an address / For we are going out tonight"/ Send the call out, send the call out,’ Raye sings. Later in the song, right before the bridge, Raye forgoes singing for a moment to speak, saying: ‘Though this season of her life had been cold, lonely and tough ... She has learned a beautiful lesson.’ Followed up by more speaking at the end, Raye completes her message of hope by saying, ‘And there she danced under the weight of her clouds / But for the first time in a long time / She believed that one day, she would again feel the sun.’
Raye has been very public about her mental health throughout her entire music career. On her song Body Dysmorphia., she opens up about her struggles with disordered eating. On Ice Cream Man., Raye sings about her experiences with sexual assault over the course of her life. On Mary Jane., Raye opened up about her story with substance abuse. To have heard her sing about her hardships so openly and honestly makes the hopeful message of the upcoming album, This Music May Contain Hope. feel all the more powerful. The vulnerability it takes to be so forthcoming is really admirable, and I feel even more excited to hear the rest of the album!
