This past Friday April 17, 2015 UIC Pavillion held Megafest 2015 powered by Powermove, Saleem Music Group, and Dream Chasers headlining the show was Young Jeezy and Meek Mill. This was a sold out show which is something that rarely happens at UIC Pavillion. Doors opened at 7 pm, but the first act did not take the stage until 8 pm (please note as a chronic concert goer shows never ever start on time, and there is always opening acts!). The opening acts included a host of up and coming Chicago artist including BowlKing, SMG squad, and JoRodeo. SMG squad held my attention with their catchy, relatable lyrics, and goes down as one of my groups to watch. Meek Mill performed first, dressed in all black with his signature puma accents performed his hit songs Levels, House Party, and Ima Boss. The funniest part of the night was when Meek Mill invited two audience members on stage to perform the Bobby Shmurda dance. As many anticipated Nicki Minaj was not in attendance although there was heavy social media speculation that she would attend the concert. I was moved by Meek Mill’s energy and showmanship as a new artist he holds promise to remain a top contender in rap music.
Last, but certainly not least Young Jeezy stole the show by performing classics from Thug Motivation Tear It Up, And then What, and Lets Get IT. Young Jeezy dressed in camel colored leather and large gold chains immediately removed them stating”enough of this cool s*** , y’all came here for a show!”Young Jeezy also performed songs from his mixtapes which is something not most artist do because the songs are not as well known as ones on the album. Jeezy closed the night with Put on which has ties with Chicago because the original version features Chicago’s very own Kanye West. Megafest 2015 was an excellent showcase of Chicago talent, and showed that Chicago can party and enjoy music in peace.
