Hi, I'm Mia, and this is my first blog post here on UIC Radio. I'm excited to be a blogger now, though I miss creating my podcast with my friend. Either way, I need writing practice, so I guess it’s okay.

Before I get into this week's blog core, I want to introduce the blog itself. It's called Lorem Ipsum because its definition is scrambled and nonsensical, and that's exactly how my brain and my writing work. I also think my sanity should keep my writing space unrestricted. So literally expect anything.

Now that you know about the point of this blog, it's time to get to me, the person writing. I'm currently a junior studying Political Science and Communications on the Pre-Law track. But that's boring information. If you really want to get to know me, I think my top four Letterboxd picks reflect who I am, duh. Now I don't really write full-on reviews, but I make little comments here and there. I'm also guilty of giving every movie a full 5 stars; what can I say? I'm easy to please. Maybe I'll reveal more about myself if I tell you which movies got the fewest stars.

Starting strong: the constant, the one that never fails and can't be beaten by any movie: Matilda. Oh, the things this movie has taught me and healed me; I owe a lot of who I am to it. I think I first watched it when I was around 8. I remember it was around the time I started staying home alone. I thought I was her. She made me feel safe and gave me the confidence to take care of myself. I even taught myself to make pancakes so I could be more like her. Later on in life, I think I related to her more because I found Ms. Honey’s in my life. How lucky am I to still have a growing list of them too. Matilda was my first-ever it girl and role model as an only child, without an older sibling.

To preface the next movie, I didn’t want to watch it at all, but my dad insisted on a family movie night and picked La La Land. The most gut-wrenching movie for family night, right? I don’t even think he understood the movie, but he still had my mom and me bawling our eyes out. This movie gives me hope for love, which might contradict the ending, but hear me out. I one hundred percent would rather feel loved and give love the way Mia & Sebastian did to each other, and then lose each other the way they did, than not feel love at all. That, and once again, I thought I was her because my name was Mia, and at the time I was taking all the acting classes at my high school, I patiently waited, and still am, for my Sebastian. (Except we go through with the alternate ending, thank you very much)

The next movie on my top four is Spider-Man: A Brand New Day. This one has changed as the Spider-Man movies have been released, and somehow each one gets better. This one continues the story from Spider-Man: Far From Home. Zendaya and Tom Holland are married in real life, and that made the movie even more emotional. Beyond the romance, the visuals were AMAZING. I enjoyed seeing comics come to life, kind of like a 3D model. I have also realized, with other new Marvel movies, that I like the dynamic they present: superheroes with so much power still go through it mentally. A deeper message that I don't think I'm willing to dissect here because I could do a whole other blog post on its own.

And the last one, the tentative one, is The Odyssey. Christopher Nolan, where have you been? No, I had never watched one of his films before this, SUE ME. What really made me love the movie was the plot, the musical score, and, most of all, my favorite scene: the Cyclops. Although some found its screams torture, I found it relaxing, almost. Not to be weird, but it was the coolest thing EVER. If I write more, I think I'll just end up going in circles about how much I love it. The review itself says, “Can’t believe it, but it has dethroned La La Land to second place,” which I lowkey take back, but that's how good it was.

And that would complete the four little boxes on my profile. I don’t know that it's the best lineup, but these are me in movies. ( I will not mention my least-starred movies because I may or may not get exiled)

ok bye.
